Guess I should update my picture now I've got a new setup
Well, I've gone Hardcore. With a capital "H".
Not in, like, a Carmen Luvana or Tera Patrick sense. No. In a "Let's take a drill and a jigsaw to £500 worth of desk".
Here is the result: (no thumbs yet: I'm at work, so can't resize. These images are fairly large).
General desk area
Bass speaker on the right by the filing cab. Stereo Amp on the left under the printer. And there's the computer, under the desk.
closer up
Originally, the underside of the desk was the same on left and right. I'm about to move the machine and desk into a new study where space it tight. The machine originally sat on the left of the shelving unit (that the printer and amp are on). As you can imagine, with cables coming out of it, it protruded quite a lot. So I hit on the idea of cutting a hole in the back pedestal of the desk to fit the wires, so the PC could sit flush against it.
Moved the under-desk shelf up a bit too, so still got storage space there. Took the front door off the PC to improve airflow, and coz I wouldn't be able to open it otherwise. The CD bay still opens here.
Another shot showing the hole in the desk to follow, but I'm quite chuffed that it's worked out as neat as it has.
Closer still
My only concern is heat build up. The rear fan vents into the follow space behind the pedestal. The desk is not flush against the wall, so there is ventilation to the sides, and the corner of the desk is cut away, so there's a "chimney" as well. I'm toying with making a proper pipe chimney/ funnel thing from the exhaust fan up behind the monitor to REALLY deal with that.
Playing Crysis and Bioshock last night with the PC in this position resulted in load tems about 5 degrees higher than when it's in an "open" environment.
Another bonus is that, as the PC is pretty central, all USB leads are within good reach of the machine. This was previously a problem where, say, powered webcam lead was not long enough, and would not work with an extension cable.
All in all, v happy with this.
Update: just put the neons in Booyaka!

Shooty how do you get to your DVD / CD drives on your PC?

You have to reach across the front, press the button, and the bays do open in the space they have. It's not brilliant, admittedly, but I rarely use the bay anyway.
Edit: Two more shots for you to show you the hole I cut, and how the wires fit through
