Asus p5B Deluxe and E6600 wont POST

    Hi

FINALLY got all the bits I needed for my new build and put them all together tonight, turned on the power and everything started beeping Got one long and two short beeps which isnt in the Asus manual. All the fans started up and the mobo and Xfi lights came on....

Unplugged everything except RAM and CPU. but still one long, two short. took out RAM, same beeps, finally took out CPU and powered up... fine. DOes this mean my CPU is buggered? or maybe the mobo...
I dont want to wait around for an RMA if I dont have to... any p5b owners out there have this problem?

    Cheers

whip the board out and hold it under a bright light and see if any of the pins in the cpu socket are bent, and also check that there are no specs of anything on the underneath of the cpu, or hairs or fluff and stuff.

Also, build the board up outside of the case on a bit of cardboard, if it fires up, youll know its a short in the case.

Oh and make sure you havent got any thermal paste on any contacts.

ok thanks, will give that a go in the morning when less tired!

any ideas about the beep codes - specs say its an AMI BIOS and from this list of AMI codes (http://www.bioscentral.com/beepcodes/amibeep.htm) that says 1 long 2 short is a video error. have reseated memory and GFX but nothing....

anyone with this board have a proper list of beep codes??

What ram are you using? Some ram needs 2.1v to boot, the motherboard will default to 1.8v an that will stop it booting. if you can borrow some cheap ram that uses 1.8v, you can boot to the bios, change the vdimm to 2.1v and exit and save, shut down and change back to your proper ram and it should fire up (thats if that is the problem).

On a different system I had similar problem, hard drives spun, everything looked like it was working but no bootup...well eventually everything pointed to the CPU but it turned out to be the PSU, and I only found out because I had a spare cpu.

That could be the issue, its Corsair XMS TwinX 6400 C4 stuff, heard of some issues with the RAM voltage but I assumed I could at least get into the bois to change that... , unfortunately dont know of anyone with DDR2 I could borrow

that corsair ram is 1.9v i think, and it should be ok to boot at 1.8v (I know mine is).

Just some obvious things to check (sorry)..

make sure the graphics card is sat properly in the slot, and make sure that the psi-e cable is plugged in.

re-seat the ram making sure it is fully into the slots until it clicks or the plastic tabs close onto the ram.

make sure all power connectors ar connected to the board. 24pin atx and 8pin atx (if your psu only has 4 pin, use that).

build it up away from the case on some cardboard if none of the above works.

do you actually know that the graphics card works? is there another system that you can try it in? same with the psu. What psu is it?

Thanks for all the tips Clunk, I went for the C4 over the C5 because of all the issues I saw with the P5B and the C5. I'm using the Corsair HX520 power supply - checked through all the cables (24 and 8pin both plugged in, ASUS led lights up blue, turns red when "booting", creative X-Fi power led on the board also lights up,a ll fans are spinning), the first time the PCI-E power for the GFX (XFX 7950 GT XXX - the passive cooling one) wasn't plugged in, but after I did plug it in, still the same issue... one long, two short, repeated over and over

Have reseated everything and clicked them all in, but what I will do when I get home is take it all out the case and try on cardboard as you suggest - should I put it on its antistatic bag or direct onto the cardboard?

Also going to try one RAM module at a time in different slots, maybe that will help..

Unfortunately I'm the first of my mates to go dual core, sata and ddr2, and the rest have laptops so I don't really have any bits I can borrow...

Use cardboard mate, the outside of an antistatic bag isnt antistatic i dont think!

if its the same with single sticks of ram in the various slots, then i think its RMA time unfortunately.

RMA the RAM you think or the GFX?

    Edit, or the mobo?

Hard to say, but Im sure that the retailer where you bought them from, will test them out for you

I know how frustrating it is when you cant test things, I have had to RMA virtually every part of this pc in the last few months, and some of the parts more than a few times.

yeah, I suppose if I do one bit I might as well do all the bits, just worried that it wont all be sorted by christmas, after which I will be away for a month

with the state deliveries are at at the moment I doubt RMAs will be sorted in two weeks...

Which GeIL did you go for? Looking for a list of RAM that definately works with this mobo, but no luck so far..
