    Anyone scanning the alien ruins?

I've a map detailing all the obelisks at one particular site in Solo mode (15 in total although only 13 pay out), but the Open version gives a load more - Are all these extra ones active? Do they all pay the same per scan?

Beware - You can name your ship, but they will be censoring all possible rude words...

Last Beta I was flying in the "Horn****er"... Should have been Hornblower, named after the obvious, but apparently blow is a rude word while horn is not... *shrug*.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

I remember playing Earth and Beyond and talking about ****pits because of the OTT censoring!

I haven't played this for over a year and should get back into it. I did purchase Horizons at the end of last year when it was on offer and did briefly try it with my Vive (took my T9 for a quick spin, probably not the easiest ship to test VR in!), but haven't had the time or inclination to pick it back up yet.

Gerrard - while there have been some additions, and I feel it's a game that get's a lot of things right -

    Ship combat mechanics
Balance of speed vs manoeuvrability (maxed out ships and now top 700m/s which is something you need to experience)
    Visuals (mostly)
    Sound effects

It still feels a game that needs padding out with content to make me what to pick it up and play it. The inordinate amount of time on what are essentially loading screens makes me grind me teeth - just the wait between docking and getting to the loadout screen...15 seconds? For no other reason than immersion. Really wish they'd make it skippable.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Loadout transition is just immersion, so is turning the ship on the docking pad. I get so little time to play now, and most of that time is spent getting somewhere to do whatever it was I wanted to do just to run out of time.

I had a play with the commander creator after I heard good things about it, I spent ages trying to get it close to my likeness, but apart from short hair and blue eyes, that's about as close as I can get it. Just not flexible enough. Still, you can do some pretty funny things in it - which is all great, for a first-person game.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Sorry to revive such a big thread, but I'm thinking of picking this up. I used to play Frontier and the sorta sequel on Amiga and PC, and loved them both. I don't game much any more but I just bought a shiny new GPU and figure I should use it for more than mining (which is much less lucrative now).

I was wondering why you would recommend this game, what I would be getting into, and the price and best way to buy now.

I would avoid PvP at first, is that possible? How many hours would you need to put into it to get to a decent setup for PvP areas? Are there clans / corporations. I played Eve Online for a few years but not for ages, though now Alan Malventano says he runs a few accounts I'm thinking of getting back into that as well. How does this compare?

thanks and again sorry for generating so many emails today lol

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Just trying to get back into this game, now that I have VR to work with it.

First few minutes and VR does make a massive difference to how the game plays but I then get suck in trying to find where the good upgrades etc are. I do appear to have found Vulcan though.

Eve and Elite are completely different beasts. I haven't played Elite for a couple of years (and Eve for over 5 years now!), but I think there is still the option of each time you play to go Solo, Group (private server basically) or Multiplayer. So avoiding PvP is easy. There are no PvP zones as such, although I think there are security levels which affect how much bounty gets placed on your head for attacking other players, so that might contribute to certain places having more piracy than others.

It is bit of a grind to get the bigger ships, but getting a reasonable set-up shouldn't take too long. Maybe 10-20 hours? It is all based on money, there are no skills unless it got added recently.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Elite isn't as spreadsheet orientated as Eve. Or so I understand Eve, I've never actually played it to be fair but I understand it's very stats heavy.

The game was meant to be broken down into season (yearly) passes, paying for additional content for the following year up front (normally £40 at the start, but eventually reducing to £20 in sales as the year progresses). This was the original game Eliteangerous (Dec 14 to Nov 15) and then followed up with Elite: Dangerous - Horizons (Dec 15 to present). As you can tell, the year long "season pass" hasn't gone to plan as we're still on season 2, which technically should have finished around Dec 16, but we're just about to get the last major update for season 2. How extra content will be paid for in future hasn't been fully explained, but season passes might be scrapped or continued at this point.

Just to clarify you can still play the core game without Horizons (or future updates) but you're locked out of major game mechanics if you don't pony up for the additional content, which can put you at a disadvantage. For Horizons this would have meant the inability to land on planets without atmosphere, and engineer ship upgrades, making your own in game avatar (holo-me) and other things.

With all that out the way, how about the actual game? Well don't buy it for a scripted space action game. Elite is more of sand box universe where you make your own adventure. It is often argued the game has no purpose and is a shallow experience, these criticisms have some truth but they don't tell the whole story. To actually fly your ship the game strikes a nice balance between realism and enjoyment. You can fly fully newtonian if you like (and some advanced pilots do). Normally the ship gives auto assist to make you constantly fly in the direct you're facing. However you will experience drift until thrusters match your direction. The ship flight mechanics and combat mechanics are superb - easy to pick up, hard to master, very fun to fly. There's escort fighters to big corvette class ships at your disposal. All feel right for their size and have pros and cons.

However in terms of mastering the game there are MANY aspects to conquer, you start in a basic ship and can earn money by doing missions, fighting, trading goods or mining. You upgrade your ship, buy new ships etc.

In the original game the upgrades ended at "Grade A" for each module. Once your ship was "A spec" is was as powerful as it could get. However 2 game upgrades changed that. First powerplay allowed you to side with a specific galactic power (NPC Avatar) which if you did their bidding gave you a weekly wage and access to a few power specific weapons / abilities. This wasn't a maker game changer and was considered optional. However the other change, the introduction of Engineers made ship upgrades vast, complex, and it can be argued made the game a grind fest to be able to compete with true PVP players, or it can be viewed as giving you unlimited scope to upgrade your ships.

The basic principle is there are 20+ engineers scattered through the galaxy who can upgrade various aspects of your ship and modules. Each element can be upgraded from level 1 to 5 (5 being the highest and hardest to find materials for). You then have the engineer upgrade the part via a random chance effect. You can hunt for parts of days for an upgrade and get a bad roll of the numbers...pro PVPers are known to roll maybe 100 times to get the best Grade 5 upgrades. However once your ship is fully spec'ed for Grade A parts wqith Grade 5 upgrades, the difference is huge. For example Grade E (starter) engines might hit 220m/s with boost, fully upgraded you might hit 550m/s boost on the same ship.

The game employs complex stats based on ship weight, heat discharge ability, thruster performance and other characteristics which all affect ships for example - use lighter ship modules and the boost speed will increase, and ship jump range.

It's a simple game to get into, and very hard to master. After 3 years there are many aspects I don't know well, and I hasn't touched on all aspects of the game.

It's definitely worth buying in my opinion, but your mileage may vary.
