    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Okie dokie, got my Thrustmaster hotas x, got my game installed on the new 850. And off we go. Oh training cool, eww external video tutorials

Ok that bit done now onto the actual game, erm, ok, so where is the best place to begin here, solo play or open space? I don't really want to get shot by every tom dick and harry every five minutes especially in the early stages of the game so solo play sounds good but then I dont want to be stuck in empty space with nothing going on so open space maybe the way forward.

As the game doesnt seem to indicate what's the pro's and con's what is the better way forward here?

    Thanks
    Jon

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Solo = npc world with little risk
Open = npc and human world with massive risk.

Man/woman up and play in open.

When i first started playing the game i played solo and found i had a much greater problem with NPC ships when compared with open. You get pulled out of supercruise much less in open play.
When your just starting in the smaller ships that's very usefull to know. I don't know if that has changed in later updates, but early on it made a massive difference.
I'd also add, as i always play open now. I've never got into combat with a player controlled ship. I'd say unless it's something your actively looking for it'll probably pass you by unless you find yourself wanted.
It's as much down to how you play.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Thanks for the input will bear that in mind.

I have never really been a pvp player in any game to be honest, always preferred the bots in first person shooters, the AI in Company of Heroes 2 etc, mainly because I am pretty busy most of the time and can pause the game and do other things.

Maybe will go both a go and see what suits me best.

    Thanks for the input.

Think it partly depends on what you are doing. I have been doing a lot of combat/bounty hunting community goals recently, and doing those in open I am stunned I haven't ended up paying out for insurance but I do get to do a lot of running away. That usually drives me to Solo.

Just general trading should be fine in Open, and if you go exploring then you won't bump into anyone anyway so it is moot

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

You can never pause ED unless you save/exit.

However there are loads of places you are lurk safely and come back 15 mins later to actually owning a ship

Ah hold on, I might be getting confused here. From what you are saying can you move from open to solo etc? I thought you could just choose one and that was it?

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

    you can switch by saving/exiting.

However you cant pause either so your ship is never 100% safe, espeically when lurking around stars

There are plenty of bountys to be had taking on NPCs too. I've been doing alot of combat lately and it's always against AI.
Simply stopping at 'unknown signal source' can mean you can rack up some good bountys. And having a FSD Interceptor i can spot alot of 'wanted' AI flying around the systems that i can nab for a bounty.

Has anyone tried the settlement missions in horizons? I accepted one to recover an occupied escape pod that was on the same planet but there were no waypoints or signals to find it.

As I said, I usually do my bounty hunting in Solo (at a Hazardous Resource site). Getting combat bonds in a conflict zone though, I have had a few times when in Open I get jumped by a wing of players, and three onto one is hard when you are against AIs but against humans I try to at least take one down before legging it but so far no joy.

Not tried measuring it, but I must be able to make a few million an hour at a good Haz Res and more to the point I find the constant destruction quite soothing

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Want to try Elite Dangerous in VR for the price of a ~ £20 VR kit?

I've made a how-to guide that's working for Elite since the launch of Horizons and the 64 bit code (both vanilla and Horizons)

As far as I'm aware, this is the only guide showing how to get it working since the release of Horizons, which broke the tracking ability.

this requires no specialist equipment - just a phone, a wifi network and a cheap head mount set (there's a range of devices available online but through a bit of research my recommendation would be the Freefly VR, Homido VR (which I have) or the ColorCross.
