Tomorrow? So is this the one where combat gets harder against NPCs? I still don't have Elite rating, on about 76% on the last rank and was wondering about making a big push for Elite this weekend. Would be annoying if it got made harder.
Yes. But don't worry, you can grind your way to roll the dice and hope to get equipment mods that help even things (if you buy Horizons. Vanilla owners are being encouraged to buy the upgrade to survive it seems).
I'm so annoyed at the business model - again! I didn't buy the game for ages because I disagreed with the always on server model, and now they're making the game less fun for vanilla and newer players*.
*the NPC difficulty will scale according to your combat ranking - so new players won't encounter shockingly hard NPCs, but they miss out because they can't compete earnings wise with older players who were able to amass fortunes in various ways before rebalancing
I had a nice few months with it though. I'm current out in deep space where I won't get bothered by NPCs, will see what it's like when I get back to the bubble but I'm not going to buy an expansion just to enable me to continue playing.
You aren't exactly selling it to me
I have horizons, so far I haven't been too impressed. The planetary landings I largely ignored so far, not been out in a rover buggy yet. Really, I just want to go out and shoot stuff at the end of a long day. I don't want to have to grind or setup anything before the pew pew starts.
heh. I think they're in a bit of a hard place - they need to add 'end game' content for players who've had the game more than a year and have amassed billions. Quick solution is to use a new currency (materials) that you have to start collecting so the billions don't ruin your fun by shortcutting. The problem is hiding features behind the expansion pay wall is well and good, so long as it doesn't spill over negatively in the vanilla worldspace - you don't want to be making the game for new payers less fun, you want to make it fun and then entice extra purchases with carrots, not sticks.
They seem to have a fascination with the grind, like some eastern MMOs, equating play time with play experience. Design decision I guess.
The changes don't seem to mesh well with career changes either - basing difficulty on combat ranking doesn't reflect your current career choice, only your past - so say you were a crack/grindy pilot in the past, but now you're a trader, you're going to get intercepted by elite NPCs in your type 9 and have no chance. Solution: you're forced to wing with other players. Which isn't how some people wanted to play elite.
The upgrades aren't really any distinct advantage though, they just offer special effects to change the proportion of the damage to something else, heat etc. There isn't always 'more' damage on a modded weapon from what I've seen. Also since they're one offs, you potentially end up with all kinds of differences in RoF etc, which can hinder as much as help.
I suppose we'll see soon enough.
Vanilla 1.6 and Horizons 2.1 just went live. Get downloading
Although might want to wait for a few of the bugs to be ironed out
Struggling to download it - think my internet connection is playing up since speed tests are only showing 3mbps!
Have also had to resort to the Alternative Download Method. Should be ready in about 13 hours. :S
Started mine downloading overnight, so no idea how long it took but was installed this morning. I got a Steam key largely in case I had another problem downloading from Frontier, the Steam update said it was over 8GB of download.
Had a play this morning, and looks like I have quite a bit to re-learn for combat. Much more of a dogfight, and lots of collisions going on. One amusing one where I had just popped an enemy shield and a Python come charging in from the side and swipes the ship I was attacking out from in front of me. Shortly after a Clipper seemed to boost straight at me, I tried to get away but my shields popped and the remaining 50% hull was gone in an instant, taking me to the insurance claim screen.
That seems to be the new flavour, it can all change in an instant. I am used to tanking through mild trouble in the FAS, but looks like now I have to fly it like an Eagle always ready to flee. That might not be as much fun, and I don't care about realistic I'm playing a game here
On the definite upside, the mission screen is a nice improvement isn't it! Will be interesting to see if community goal involvement improves now they are easy to find.
