Just got this and quite annoyed, just cant get it to run. Everytime I try and start it I get the error message cannot innitialise 3D engine for some unknown reason. Tried all the usual stuff like drivers etc but its now doing my head in !

Dont get it working soon its going back to the shop

Bizarre thing is that all my other games are running just fine at the min with no errors, really strange why this is happening on this one. Might actually be faulty, will persevere for a little while longer and see if I can get it going. If not it will have to go back

I was gonna say it might be Direct X but if all ur other games are fine then I dunno

set your desktop resolution to 1024 x 768, and try it again mate.

Cheers Skii mate, changing the res on the desktop sorted it !

I remember now also when I bought the Splinter Cell games I had to change the desktop bit depth to 32 to get them working. Quite weird really, shouldnt matter what you have the desktop set to as PC games are fully configurable once loaded.

Doing the tutorials at the min. Now, I dont normally play sims at all (last time was a tank sim on the Commodore Amiga many moons ago !)

Lets keep it simple and start at the start ! Navigation !

I am stuck, pure and simple. You have to navigate through the channel at SSE, now looking at the map I plot a bog standard course through the channel and into open water at standard speed, however when I look at the objectives its showing incomplete on that bit. So I'm getting pretty confused now wondering just what to do and where to go.

Press 'M' - this shows your radio ops log book and you can check the next order there.

Have to follow the orders to the letter, dive when it says so, go at the correct speed. The other tutorials arn't so picky.

Trouble is its not telling me when I complete the objectives by the look of it. I assume the SSE direction is literally just through the initial canal where you start, so how do I know when I have done it, or does it not show as complete till all objectives are done ?

Must admit, some grid refs would be nice to get you going on the right tracks !

I just hope I can get my head round this or I will have to take it back and just stick to the stuff I am pretty good at !

Every time you get a radio message, check the note pad to see your progress, you will know each time you complete an instruction becuse the new radio message will give you a new instruction and show the previous one as complete.

The initial navigation exam is purely there to teach you how to manually steer the boat and perform basic maneuvers, you won't get it all straight away, but it will sink in Its a big game to learn and it can only be done in small chunks - keep at it

Anyhow, back to SH3.

Sucessfully navigated the canal etc and all objectives showing as complete, getting return to base now, so heading back to where I started but not managing to finish due to the return to base bit. Any tips on returning home and finishing the mission succesfully ?

Looks like I'm getting there with it at last, like you all said, just takes a bit of time and patience !

Right.. now that I have got the jist of finding targets, I'm finding it darned difficult to not get wasted by the first blighter I see.

Trying to stalk people is proving almost impossible - the only hits I have scored so far is as the ship is charging towards me, even these were lucky as the ships are jinking wildy (to avoid torps obviously).

Why the hell can a destroyer spot my periscope from 10km away, even if I am not moving and the 'scope is barely breaking the surface?!

Forgot to add that I normally stalk using just sonar and hydraphone, but the second I pop up the periscope to get a firing solution, or to check I have the Sonar and hydraphone readings correct: "We have been detected Sir!"
