All those of you think you're macho for saying the death sentence should be carried out for certain crimes, what do you think of this news story then?

Had capital punishment been in place at that time he would have swung.

Just to repeat my stance on this issue - I'm for the death sentence where guilt is proved beyond doubt.

And yes, I'd willingly pull the lever, pull the trigger, apply the anodes, whatever, I'm not squeamish and I did father three daughters so I have a kinda inbuilt protective/vicious streak.

But it just goes to show what could happen and I'm proud of the UK for not having a death sentence.

And that's where the problem is... As easy as it is to say beyond doubt, it's incredibly hard to prove in real life. There are numerous cases, such as the one you mentioned, where guilt that had been proven are overturn years later.

So we have to ask ourselves, are we we willing to risk the lives of a few innocent people for the sake of permenantly getting rid of the few we deem to dangerous to live?

I'll agree forensics have come on in leaps and bounds and generally speaking there don't seem to be so many horrible gits in the police force today as there were in the seventies and before.

But infallible? No.

Agreed on the first paragraph, my answer no to the second.

It would have to be quite conclusive proof I suppose, a confession alone would not suffice.

Something like three independent witnesses and the whole dirty deed captured on CCTV, that would almost eliminate doubt would it not?

It would seem to, but who's to say that in 10 or 20 years time new evidence wouldn't come to light which astonishing proved the defendent innocent?

Terribly unlikely but not impossible, and it's awfully hard to repeal a death sentence after it's been carried out!

While killing people is a horrible thing to do, killing people who kill people is also a horrible thing to do, and you never know, you could be killing that one dude who is actually telling the truth when he says he didn't do it.

No, i only read a few pages. I agree with you that life should definately be 'until you die'. This way they will at least have a chance at proving their innocence. However, even if guilt could be proven undeniably, i still would not advocate the death penalty, regardless of how terrible the crimes commited were. It would be better if they were to rot in prison.

I have to assume that you're a bit of a hypocrite, and that you are indeed for killing people.
Perhaps I misunderstood, and that you meant that in some cases you would whole heartedly agree to actual life in prison, in which case, I'd agree.

No, you didn't misunderstand. Had you taken the time and effort to read the entire thread, you'd see that I was for the death sentence - where there is no doubt whatsoever of the guilt of the accused.

I find the death sentence abhorrent but as a parent if somebody killed one of my children and I knew it was them, I'd kill them, and gladly swing for it if the law so decreed.

Come to think of it, if anybody killed anybody and was found guilty without doubt, I'd kill them too. And sleep easy.

But.

Lottsa folks here planted seeds of doubt in my mind so, I will repeat, broadly speaking I'm anti death sentence.

I hope nobody ever wastes anybody close to you. It may just change your whole POV.
