Digital Rights Management- Do you think companies should put DRM on products?

    Hey guys,

First off let me apologize if this in the wrong section or deemed as advertising, i can assure you it's not!

I'm currently doing my dissertation on Digital Rights Management and would really like to see users opinions on this matter,

I have a questionnaire that is only 18 questions long so will be super quick to fill out and I would really appreciate your help!

    Link to questionnaire: http://form.servebbs.net/tom/view.php?id=1

Also would be great to see what users think of DRM and if companies should put DRM on products, do you think it's worth all the effort?

    Thanks very much

Tonka777- Sorry I forgot to mention this crucial fact, all questionnaire answers are totally anonymous nothing personal is recorded and no personal information is gathered when completing this questionnaire.

    hope this helps

I think if you purchase a product you should be able to do as you please with it.

So .... if I write a book, you feel you should be able to copy the words, send it to a printer, have 100,000 (or more) printed and start selling them yourself, or merely giving them away so that I don't make the sales I would have made? Considering that that book would have taken months of hard work to write, and then has marketing and production costs, I'm not going to be able to afford to write another one after you've finished doing "as you please" with it. So, the sequel to my masterpiece will never get written, and not only do I lose my livelihood, but the fans of the book never get another instalment in their story.

    Nice going.

What if you just purchase the right to use a product in a certain way, rather than the product and all the rights outright?

    OP, some survey suggestions:
#5 needs a 'no' answer, or maybe rephrase the question.

#6 needs a 'depends on the number of activations' answer.

Re: Digital Rights Management- Do you think companies should put DRM on products?

    # 1. Roughly how many computer games and movies do you own?

    Say I owned 1 game and 50 movies - I'd select 50+

    # 2. Out of those games you own, how many do you own legally

If the 1 game I owned was illegally obtained, I'd have to select something, but there's no option for 1 > 9

Perhaps remove the "movie" from the question as this appears to be game focused and maybe add a 1 > 9 option?

Not many randomers in their house have the capacity to print 100,000 copies of your book though.

I think the only objection people have is the abuse of the original intent of copyright law, which has been vast, in recent years, especially since USia passed the DMCA, content corporations have been embolded with the inflated opinion that they own us if we buy anything covered by their copyright.

It matters not if 1 person prints 100,000 copies of 50,000 copies print 2 copies each. I still lose the revenue, and the second book still doesn't get written.

But you ignore the point. The poster said "I think if you purchase a product you should be able to do as you please with it." By that logic, someone could just copy my work, go into business printing and selling it and by his standard, that's just fine and dandy.

Who is going to spend six months or a year writing a book, let alone $100m making a Hollywood blockbuster if someone can rip off a chunk of their profits with impunity, as implied by his comments?

And, if you're an editor, or proof-reader, or printer, or .... etc .... you're going to be looking for a new job.

The implication of "buy it and do what you like with it" is, if taken to the extreme, that there will shortly be nothing new worth buying, because the artists and creative types will either have starved or be retraining as plumbers. Mind you, for some of the drivel I've seen produced by creative types, maybe that's not entirely a bad thing. We need more plumbers.
