Red face Couple of things with my 3xs build.

    Hi guys,
Just some points on my system, hoping someone would take a look and see if they have any suggestions, thanks.

firstly, the fan on the memory chips makes a horrible noise when starting up for the first 30 seconds, then the noise goes away. I was told that this would go away after a while, but after 2 months it's still as noisey as ever - it's a minor glitch but i would like to get it sorted.

secondly, i'm still getting from time to time a single high pitched beep from inside the PC.
I don't know what device is causing it, fan speeds and temps look ok (i've seen them higher without a beep).
This doesn't seem to interfere with the operation of windows, everything still works when the beep occurs - its happens about once ever two or three days.

thirdly, it was suggested that i try to boot normally and not overclocked to avoid problems with some programs (not that i've had that yet) so i tried today to boot into normal mode for the first time and had a dos message saying "bootmgr is missing" and windows failed to start. Overclocking profile allows windows to run. hope thats a simple one to sort.

Overall, i'm very pleased with PC still. Windows 7 is much better than XP. if i could resolve these things above i'd be 100% happy

    Andy.

Re: Couple of things with my 3xs build.

    Hi

Please email your build number to systemsupport@scan.co.uk and we will look into this for you
and sort a new memory fan out.

In order to determine what the issue is please reload the Standard Profile but before saving and exiting goto the Boot Section of the bios and make sure in the hard disk section that the first hard drive is the one with the OS on it otherwise you will get the bootmgr error message

    Regards

    Ben

Re: Couple of things with my 3xs build.

    Hi Ben.
I emailed support as requested with info, but not heard anything back yet.

I checked the boot priority of the standard boot profile and the SSD isn't listed (the windows drive).
But it is shown on the overclocking profile.
I don't know how to add it to the standard profile.

As an update to the non-booting issue, which used to occur once every now and again, tonight's attempt to start the computer failed 4 times before finaly working on the 5th.

I'm guessing there might be a point where it fails to boot completely.
If you've any suggestions on why this is happening or perhaps how to create some 'fall-back' profiles if that might help.

Re: Couple of things with my 3xs build.

    Hi,
Thanks for the email Ben, and the offer to replace the fan.
    sorry for late reply.
if its not too much trouble to fit i'd like to try a new fan to fix the noise problem.

btw, in reference to the boot failures, it looked like an over-clocking issue as after setting
the bois to normal boot the pc starts evry time no problems.

i still get an occasional beep from inside the pc, dont know why. nothing logged and
    everything seems to run fine.

Re: Couple of things with my 3xs build.

    Hi Ben.
    Thanks for Email.
I've installed the new fan, everything is quiet as a mouse with it now.
What do you want me to do with the old fan ?

Also, i've not played about with the over-clocking info, think i'll let it stay as it is for a while and see how it goes. The beeping also seems to have stopped too (cross fingers)

The are two other issues that you might be able to point me in the right dirrection with.
I don't think their specific to the build, maybe just windows 7 bugs.

    1) As far as i can tell for the last two months on the 20th and 21st the PC hangs during shutdown with a message about 'operations are in progress'. Although there are google references to other people on the net with the same message, most replys seem to point at Acronis backup software. Is there any way to find out what actually prevented a safe PC shutdown (i've yet to try today).

    2) In the even viewer there are a couple of red messages that have been appearing reguarly. (daily)

    a) two sidebyside errors, they list as Nero manifest errors: event 35
    b) Schannel 36888 Fatal alert 10 - Inernal error state 10

    Any ideas?

    Andy

Re: Couple of things with my 3xs build.

    Hi Andy

You can throw the old fan away as we dont need it back

With reference to the Side by Side error there are a few people with this issue and I first came across this in windows XP , Microsoft released a Side by Side fix and it is something to do with the VB Runtime files

There are a few links here that may help

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...3-bbf3fa531820
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...9-ecafcac9f96e

The Shut down issue is relating to the Acronis more than likely you can turn off the schedule an manually run Acronis backups to prevent this

The system is trying to shut down while it is backing up and this is what is causing the issue

Re: Couple of things with my 3xs build.

I'm not sure if i need to start a new thread for this, or post it here.

The new fan that's been as quiet as a mouse since installed is starting to buzz.
It's sounds like a angry wasp and does it from pc power up to shutdown.
(unlike last fan that was noisey for the first 5 mins on startup).

Do you have any suggestions ?
I know that one fan faulty is rare, but two fans must be unheard of.

Re: Couple of things with my 3xs build.

    Hi Andy

The fans are sometimes a bit loud when new, is it loud when the system is first turned on or does it continue after the system has been on for a while?

I had one of these fans (It was an Abit one though) and it annoyed me that much I took it out and providing you have good airflow you dont need it to cool the ram

You can also add a voltage restrictor that connects to the fan and then to the board that slows the speed of the fans down slightly and should take the noise away

Drop me a reminder email at systemsupport@scan.co.uk and I will post one out to you

    Regards

    Ben

Re: Couple of things with my 3xs build.

    Hi Ben,

Another late reply by me, sorry for that,.

The fan is noisey from when switched on to when its switched off.
it sounds like a trapped wasp.
it's not a major bother to me as i normally wear headphones when on the pc anyway.
i'm not sure if slowing the fan speed is needed at this point in time, i'll stick with it until it annoys me.
    (thanks for the offer anyway).

Perhaps i may consider buying a replacement in the future, if you could recomend one i'll make a note.
Something easy to fit, kinda idiot proof.

    Thanks,
    Andy.
