OK so I received the Gainward 210 512Mb ordered yesterday and sent the other card back to Scan on the City Link truck................
Is the Gainward 210 512Mb card not supposed to have a SPDIF connector cable supplied with it?
There is no sign of one in the box....
Now I don't want to RMA this card as I can't afford to waste the time but I do need a SPDIF connector cable - that's the whole point of this machine.....so how can I get one?
Something is going wrong with QC at Scan. It never used to be like this.

Are you sure it says included and not just optional? Or telling you about the spdif connector?
If the box was sealed its not QC at Scan, not even the supplier, thats a QC problem with the manufacturer, something that no retailer can avoid.
Also check whether or not you need spdif, many new cards have built in sound codecs for use over HDMI, thus negating the need for the cable

There is nothing wrong with our QC for GPU's as we don't manufacturer them and therefore we don't QC them. We do have a sampling stage but this does not check box contents, this job is for the manufacturer's to do.
You seemed to ask the question "Is the Gainward 210 512Mb card not supposed to have a SPDIF connector cable supplied with it?" but then continued to comment about us as if this were a fact?
Checking the PDF there is no mention of a supplied SPDIF connector cable, therefore unless I have missed something it suggests one isn't supposed to be supplied.

and how can I get one on its own?

GRRRRRRR!!!!!
I got a SPDIF cable with my Palit 9800GT I assumed not unrerasonably that they came with all HDMI cards - If they are not included then the spec should warn so...

Have you tried changed the Audio out settings to digital out?
Usually the Box contents only show included accessories, it's very odd for a manufacturer to list accessories, which are not included as this list could be very long, it makes more sense to only list the accessories, which are included.
I just assumed all HDMI graphics card came with the SPDIF connector...my Palit never said it was included but it was..
It is a component I think anyone would expect to be included with an HDMI card...I know I did...was I wrong to assume this? Obviously but my experience is that they are included.
Are they listed as separate components on Scan's site?
I don't think so........
Scan don't even sell this cable.
Currently my Palit9800GT is not using the HDMI output so, if I can find it [I never connected it in the firat place], I'll use the SPDIF connectort from that....if I can find it that is [doubt it very much]...
Why is nothing ever as simple as you hope?

I haven't built the machine yet.
I won't be using the optical out from the sound card as all the optical inputs on my Denon amp are already occupied.
I need the HDMI to pass audio.
I use the Denon AVR as a HDMI source switch between this machine I'm building, my SkyHD box, my VU+ satellite box and my BluRay palyer....
The optical digital audio inputs are occupied by TV (freeview and USBdongle streamed stuff) and by VU+ [I can only get VU+ to pass PCM stereo via HDMI so need the optical input for the bitstream].

Can you try the card in a different machine as I am being told the latest NVIDIA drivers can pass Audio through the HDMI.
