Fraud at Scan? - Nationwide Bank.

    Hello there.

I've been a customer of Scan before, and have always been impressed with the top quality service and prices that you guys provide. However, after I made an order today, I noticed my payment was not authorised. Upon double checking with a customer service rep on the phone that my details were correct, I headed down to the bank to see what was going on.

I arrived at Nationwide Bank who informed me that my card had been blocked and that I need to contact Special Investigations Puzzled, I phoned up Special Investigations who went through a list of recent transactions with me, which I confirmed were all made by me, until we got to the Scan order which I had placed this morning.

I was then informed that my Card has been blocked because they have had reports of Debit/Credit Card Fraud from people using Scan. I have now had to cancel my order and wait 10-14 days for a new card

Now, I am very confused about this, as I know Scan is one of the biggest Computer Hardware sites in the UK and I have used them before and had no problems at all; so have many friends of mine. I would like to get down to the root of the issue as I suspect the same thing will happen again if I try and order off Scan with my new card.

I would like to say, this is not a pop at Scan in anyway, I am just informing them that Nationwide clearly have issues with the site, and they should look into getting things sorted

    Thanks.

Why did your bank confiscate your card when they went thru all your recent transactions with you and found no dodgy purchases? It sounds very strange to me.

And of course no doubt Scan will take hits from credit card fraud like every other online and high St store.
It is a major problem but you make it sound from your post heading that Lee and Co are trying to break in to our piggy banks!

I'm with Nationwide and had no problems :|

for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Re: Fraud at Scan? - Nationwide Bank.

This is something that happens with any electronics store - basically, people use fraudulent or stolen cards to make some types of transactions more than others, ie they'll try and get goods they can then sell on. Money laundering, in essence. As a result some cards are very pro-active in just blocking purchases by default - electronics stores, itunes, amazon etc. are all very commonly blocked if it's your first few transactions with that store.

Is it likely to happen again? Possibly, but the chances are very much lower now that you've authorised the previous transaction with that store. If in doubt give your card company a call before or soon after using these kinds of purchases.

You shouldn't need a new card though. These kinds of card blocks are temporary and fully reversible by the bank.

i had this once with lloyds they never took my card but they blocked a big purchase. When we spoke to them they explained we had made about 10 purchases under £10 in the space of a few days and then spent £350 on something and the system flagged it up as suspicious. Was easily sorted over the phone though.

Re: Fraud at Scan? - Nationwide Bank.

I find this very strange in all honesty, if banks cancelled cards because companys where victims of fraud we would all be out of business, everyone has their share. its a common problem and probably always will be.

considering we are a large company our fraud levels are pretty small in comparison, our payment team have a great record of stopping fraud (and hes from Wigan so doesnt like giving much away at the best of times) ...

on another note i am also with nationwide and i have never had an issue in the many years i have worked here.

I would speak to them again and ask them why they have took the decision to cancel your card, as this makes no sense at all ....

I have replied to your PM

I was quite confused too. As I say, I have used SCAN for years and so have many of my friends and collueges without any issues what-so-ever.

I guess Nationwide are just taking pre-cautions

Re: Fraud at Scan? - Nationwide Bank.

Nationwide are very proactive towards fraud, if you've not used that card for that kind of purchase before then it gets flagged up (in my experience anyway).

I got asked on setting my account up to sort of goods i would most likely be purchasing.

It's just SCAN sell some rather expensive things, therefore are very attractive to fraudsters...

Seems very odd what they told you though... Fair enough block the card while checking the issue, but cancelling it? I think you got a new/poorly trained customer service guy TBH...

I've never had any problems with Egg, Smile, Capitalone, Halifax or Nationwide with SCAN, BUT, electronic stuff is my spending pattern...
