lol saracen - lets face it - your getting older and wiser mate (that includes me too, I agree with you on most points BUT - to remain on top of the game (technology) - one has to take the plung sooner rather than later - hence my decision to get one soon....
Its like when you first get a car - boot the crap out of it from one set of lights to another, by the time you hit 30 yrs of age, you know that your just wasting fuel hencing burning away money, you know that your going to get to the same place as the guy booting it in front of you round about the same time - if you get what I mean.
btw - ANY SIGN OF THESE DRIVES YET PLEASE SCAN!?! - An update was expected monday this week, but still nothing..... danke....
Actually, it wasn't that long after my 30th that I bought a BMW M3, so I certainly know about indulging in "toys". Fuel mileage wasn't top of my priority list. Still isn't.
I don't feel the need to "keep up" with technology, though, I spent years travelling the world getting briefings on the latest whizz-bangs, courtesy of the manufacturers. I've been round clean rooms in the USA, and the Far East, and had briefings from everyone from product managers to CEO's of Intel, IBM, Epson, Lexmark and so on. I've had the NDA tours round secure labs with code-locked doors, such as at Apple. Probably, that's why I view a PC as a tool, not a toy. Too often, I've had the latest toy, months before it was released. Colour lasers, for instance .... when HP released their first colour laser, I had one at home several months before the hit the market, and according to HP's Press Manager (at that time) the one I had was one of two in the UK.
So "keeping up" isn't a justification for me, but I certainly accept that it is for some people. It can be added to the valid list of reasons why people buy these, in addition to everything from "I want one, all right?" to "I need one for my work, because every extra bit of performance matters". Its just that none of them, including that one, apply to me.
Maybe - but as usual, eloquently argued, and as he says, from his perspective, the cost benefit doesn't make sense. I have to say it doesn't from my perspective either.
It is new technology, and while I am extremely grateful for the new adopters to find any potential faults or problems, I am more than happy to wait for any flaws to be identified (and fixed) and for prices to drop before I invest. Shaving a few ms off an operating system boot time makes no difference to my computing experience. For others it may be a different story.
I felt the same way about the introduction of ADSL2 - I suspected there would be problems and there were. I waited 12 months before I moved over - the speed improvement wasn't that crucial that I needed to be an early adopter - reliability was more important, and when the teething problems had been sorted - that was the right time (for me) to move.

Piffle - it wasn't intended as such don't be so silly. As for banging on - yes you do and what could be said in a sentence or two turns into a essay. Thrice. Whilst you often add real value on these forums I can't see anything more than you making the same point over and over in this thread - the point of which was to ask what's happened to the drives rather than the justification for buying one (logical or not). I honestly have no problem with your view, so respectfully can we get back OT and can someone from Scan let us know what's going on please?
OcUK just got the 160GB models back in stock....but still no sign of the 80GB drives anywhere.....wonder if the 80GBs were all pre-ordered?
Annoying how so many peoples orders have been delayed over a bug that will not effect 99% of users

Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.
