    Which 24" Monitor

ok, lots and lots of posts about 24 inchers but noticed scan have the following on today only:-

    24" Acer AL2416WB Widescreen LCD, 1920x1200, 1000:1, 400 cd/m2, 5ms, VESA £163.99 £192.69

    24" Dell 2407WFP-HC V2 Silver/Black Widescreen LCD, 1920x1200, 1000:1, 400 cd/m2, 6 ms, VESA £352.00 £413.60

    24" HyundaiIT W240D Black Widscreen LCD, 1920x1200, 3000:1, 400cd/m2, 2ms, HDMI/DVI/Component £305.00 £358.38

    24" HyundaiIT W240D, Black Widescreen 1920x1200, 3000:1, 500cd/m2, 4ms, HDMI/DVI/Component PVA Panel £345.00 £405.38

    24" HyundaiIT W241D, Black Widscreen, 1920x1200, 3000:1, 500cd/m2, 6ms, HDMI/DVI/Component PVA Panel £362.00 £425.35

    24" LG L245WP Black Widescreen LCD, 1920x1200, 1000:1, 500 cd/m2, 8 ms, HDMI/DVI/VGA £344.00 £404.20

I need a monitor and my initial thoughts was with the Dell but noticed the others have HDMI - I want the monitor for mainly office/photo work - desktop real-estate is important to me, but also plan to buy either a Xbox360 or PS3 and may want to hook it up to the monitor also. So, any thoughts

    Re: Which 24" Monitor

I would say the HP w2408h.... Can get it from Comet for £349.00, or under £300 from CCL, has HDMI and VGA inputs but most importantly in my eyes it will do 1:1 pixel mapping so you can have true 1080p if you were to get a 360 or PS3.

Comes with a decent stand as well. Was playing around with it in Comet the other day and it's brilliant. The only downside in my eyes is the lack of inputs compared to some others.

Now all we need to do is convince Scan to get them in

Woaaaah. Be careful there as many of those are TN panels. If you want to do a lot of work/desktop stuff then they wont serve you well im afraid.
You should be looking at getting a non TN panel.
Also be careful of glossy screens. Id advise you check them out first, by visiting a store or alike and viewing them.

Some have had ghosting issues (apparently those only made in Mexico). If you can get the non HC version, rev A04, get it!

The Acer is pants prettymuch. Using them for CAD work at work, and they're passable at best.

    Re: Which 24" Monitor

I have the Hyundai W240D and really like it, lowest brightness normally and about 70 for gaming with a 70 contrast ratio, looks good with a Wii (from a distance) too

and the more expensive W240D is actually a PVA panel IIRC

Comparison to the HP the HP has a slightly better style stand, the Hyundai the inputs and performance seems similar

Mmmm, finally a dual-DVI monitor! Displayport and HDMI inputs too - multi-input goodiness! Even better, the 3008 improves vastly on the 3007 by having more than just a solitary DVI input, making it perfect as both a monitor and also a second TV/console display.

    Post Re: Which 24" Monitor

I've got the Dell 2407wfp. I actually back-tracked onto this thread bcs I'm looking for a new display/graphics card combo with display port.

    I digress.

I forsee a price war about to happen with 22" + monitors. It's happened with 15" - hell where can you even BUY one now? 17" is happening, as is 19". 22in is starting. A good 24in still costs over £350. (I paid £399 all in for my Dell about 3/4 months ago.)

I reckon 24in monitors will be coming in at around the £225 - £250 mark by the end of 2008. At that price, I'll probably buy the new 2408 - which I've heard has displayPort - and try Supreme Commander on a dual-screen setup.

I haven't the original poster's question very well, have I? Sorry.

Sorry to dig my teeth in, but there are several Acer models, of varying specs. It would help if you could be specific, ideally with links. (The Ilyama didn't look all that nice, when I just checked.)

    Re: Which 24" Monitor

Well it depends if you are interested in the best display, or the monitior itself has to look cool. Looks aren't everything and a monitor, particularly a 24" is an expense - unless you are made of money you will be staring at it for a while! Yea the Iiyamas are a bit dull looking but my old 17" has done faithful service and nary a dead or stuck pixel in all that time.
Toms Hardware rate 24" Iiyama fairly highly as do PCPro
and you can't argue with their pricing at sub £300

I *want* a new monitor but I cannot help feeling that better tech may be on the way. Not that I want a TN panel, but beggars cannot be choosers! The other problem is not being able to clap eyes on the things in the flesh as local shops do not keep a range of stock to compare and contrast. Reviews and reviewers may be partial so who do you trust for honest unbiased advice?

Personally I am starting to think of getting one of the Hyundai W241D-PVA 24" - anyone got or seen one that would care to comment?

    Good post. Interesting points.
    • Looks matter to me, but maybe I'm vain.
    • If Tom's rate something highly, who am I to argue?
    • Sub-300 is exceedingly good, but I'd make sure it had at least DVI, pref with HDCP. (To future-proof.)

Anyway, I'll stop hogging the thread, and let someone give their opinion on the Hyundai.

Mine may be the W240D PVA...not sure how I would find out though........Cost about £400 a couple of months ago, Scan sell the TN one for £350ish and the PVA for about the same but when I bought it it didnt say.

Connectivity is REALLY good on them though, HDMI, DVI with hdcp, VGA, component and RCA/3.5mm audio inputs so you can split an audio output so only the device on the screen uses it

    Re: Which 24" Monitor

i'd go for the new 2408, i like my monitors to look good. But it should be backed up with top performance too, can't lose (providing the ghosting issue is fixed from the 2407HC).

Also consider the cheap PVA panel on OCUK, it's not issue free though (some panels have backlight bleed, some are absolutely perfect), but you can't ignore that price. good warranty, too.
