Imagine the design process for this.
start > all programs > AMD's in-house VLSI program
File > open > dual-core-phenom.vhdl
*Select one of the cores*
Edit > copy
*Click in some space*
Edit > paste
File > spin

(I don't think it's quite that simple, though).
Since 2 is a prime number as well, that's not really novel .Yes, that's right, a prime number of cores will be coming to a desktop near you, next year.

I will be very surprised if this isn't due to yields - maybe it could be that they can't win vs C2D with 2 Cores...?

Fair enough.
If I was AMD I'd hit the market with them at the same time as the quad-cores. We waited long enough for Barcelona, they should make a positive statement by getting tri-core out of the door quickly.
It purely using up spare yields...
