Smile 5th Jan 2010 - Nexus One (Google phone)...

    tnkgrl.wordpress.com/2009/12/18/exclusive-google-nexus-one-hands-on
It’s much nicer looking in person than in pictures

[..]The screen appears to be OLED (same size/resolution as the Motorola Droid [Milestone])

[..]It’s super snappy! Faster than the Droid…

    [..]flash is weak
Read my post – I didn’t say the OS lacks multitouch! The browser and Google Maps lacks multitouch (like pinching) – same as the Droid…
    from Comments:
    thinner than the iPhone
"Does it have a 3.5mm headphone jack?"
    "Yes, of course."

It’s true that the Nexus One looks much better in the flesh than in the photos. It’s very slim, not plastic at all as some people have commented and the screen is superb. For my money it’s much cooler than the iPhone, consumers will love it.
I have been using the Nexus One for about a week and hands down its the best phone I have had in years….and all the rich apple fan boys drool over it.

initially, the Google Smartphone Android device will be sold online only from January 5th 2010.
This means probably means that it will be fairly easy for people not in the US to get hold of it.. If they decline shipping of non-US (though doubt it), use a friend or http://bundlebox.com I reckon.

Aye I'm pretty keen on this phone from what I've seen on the net. Waiting to see the official price, hopefully on the 5th. If it's close to the reported ~$550/£350 mark then I'm sold! :-)

If it's more than that, the Acer Liquid could be an alternative as it's a similar form factor and sells for around £350. The drawbacks with it (that make the Nexus One more appealing) are the underclocked Snapdragon @768MHz and the OS updates controlled by Acer, who so far haven't said they'll definitely update handsets to Android 2.0.

Re: 5th Jan 2010 - Nexus One (Google phone)...

I was in a quandry about a month ago, as I had heard rumours about the Nexus, but was looking at buying the HTC Hero (another Android phone, for those who don't swot up on HTC products, as there really are too many out just now ).

I ended up getting the Hero, since it is going to get a similar software update to make it 2.1 (Eclair/Flan), and it has most of the key features I've read about.

Unfortunately, I really can't see the attraction in a 'Gmail/Wave-esque' invite-only system, especially when you would be paying what is really an extortionate amount for a nice piece of hardware (don't get me started on the actual cost-to-build of mobile phones vs. their selling price!).

Had this been a genuinely free phone, (free as in beer ie. no contract necessary) or at least cost price, then fair enough, but as it stands, not enough to interest people, I reckon. It's a commercial product, and invite-only doesn't ever seem to work when you also have to pay.

Where did you hear or read that it's invite-only, I think you might have got the wrong end of the stick, from what it says on the links I put up they have been doing that before official release (so developers can test and create things for them), but after 5th Jan it's available for anyone to buy unlocked...

It's a nice looking phone and I think the Android platform is getting pretty mature now, so I may think about moving away from the iPhone this year (well more importantly O2).

It'll be interesting to see what else comes out of the CES trade show next week

Maybe I'm taking this out of context, but I'm not sure the cost (as reported so far) is "extortionate". At ~$550 it's a premium phone, but on a par with the Motorola Droid and less than (correct me if I'm wrong) the iPhone 3GS. The Hero is cheaper, but it's an older model now with a smaller screen, less powerful processor etc. Fair play though, if that's what you're after - if the Nexus ends up being too expensive, the Hero could be an option for me too (although I'd prefer a larger screen).

Re: 5th Jan 2010 - Nexus One (Google phone)...

it looks expensive but it is basically a hd2 with android and the retail unlocked for £500. at the currrent rate it works out at about £300 of the same as a hero after tax and shipping from the us if those prices are indeed correct. i have a feeling a portion of my student loan may be diverted towards this.

So the phone is locked to just T-Mobile if you want the use of 3G or is this USA only kind of restriction?

    2010/01/04 4:42PM telegraph.co.uk/technology/google/6932346/Google-to-launch-Nexus-One-smartphone.html
Called the Nexus One, Google will unveil the handset at its Silicon Valley headquarters in America tomorrow, and the device is set to go on sale there from January 12. A UK launch date has not yet been announced, but it is likely to follow early this year.

    [..]
rumoured toinclude a larger screen and better camera than those featured on the iPhone. It also offers free satnav capabilities, which are only available for an additional charge on the iPhone.

The handset is likely to cost consumers $179.99 (£111) on a contract with T-Mobile, but will also be available for $529.99 (£324) without any contract tying users to a specific network.

Hmm this is interesting, I currently have the Nokia 5800 which I love.. I did laugh when I was using my phone in all the snow and ice recently with my gloves on when all the iPhone users had to keep taking off there gloves.

I was tempted by the Android phones.. this looks promising when I come to upgrade.

A friend of mine is waiting on his Droid/Milestone to be delivered, I'm waiting to see what this one is like, I might even replace my Touch Diamond 2 a little prematurely with it.
