Thing is, I spent 2 years admin'ing 2 2003 DCs and a 2k mail server, and I didn't have any (major) troubles. Just getting the basic features on this to function is a pain in the arse.

Could be a firewall problem?
Disabled on client computer, and as far as I can tell, nothing on the WHS machine that shouldn't be there?
Quoting from anothe forum:
"I got it to install by logging on to the server through network places,
and then running the install from the server,
I also had to do it manualy, by telling it to look for server, (did not work using IP address)
the defualt name is server, I still had to tell it to look for server, when booting from the restore CD"
Just found this on the bug report part of the site:
Which is exactly the issue I've had. So its not me being a numpty, which is always good to hear. Of course, this does mean I'm no closer to being able to use it.Description
The WHS server software installed just fine on an old Micron Millennia Pentium III PC. I installed the Connector Software on two PC's one running Windows XP Pro with SP2 and the second running Vista Business Edition. On both PC's the installation stops after the server password is entered with "an unknown network error has occurred". The server is accessible via the network browser and I can log on using either the administrator or user name/password. I can also access the server via Internet Explorer using the server's IP address. I am on a local network using a Linksys Router . I ran TALQ.EXE on the WinXP PC, CAB File # 332276491 and on the WHS, CAB File # 332276823
Please get back to me.
Thank you, Larry Reznick
I also turned off the firewall on the server and the client side then ran Home Server Console and after entering the server password I get "this computer cannot connect...."
Have you got a link to that forum? If so, could you post it, or PM it to me? Cheers

incase anyone else wants it
p.s. i thought you were dave46 on it but then i saw it managed to work for them hehe
One of them points to an IIS issue, but I can access the page required quite happily, but only upon entering the IP rather than HostName.
Could try installing the connector from the server?
Been there, tried that
Well, running it from a share on the server, I don't think its possible to run the program on the server and select the PC.
2am in the morning isnt the best time to think of things lol... ooo could directly connect the PC and server and try the connector software?
Heh, 2am and I've been working at it since half 10
Directly connect? you mean via crossover cable? (which is one thing I haven't got).
I'm still thinking along the lines it has something to do with not being able to resolve the host name (in this case 'server').
Yer thats what im thinking... so getting the switch and the router (running dns yer?) out of the way is a start.
Turn the dns on, on the server?
o and try the dns-lookup dos command
All I get with that is:
Default Server: BelkinModem.belkin
Address: 192.168.2.1
Which doesn't help me much
ipconfig /displaydns
?
ah I went NSLookup doh
Right, this is what I've got from ipconfig /displaydns
I've also got the Host Name bit working again, seems my router didn't like me changing the IP to a static one which was different to the one the DHCP had initially assigned.
