Or in my case a slightly older laptop that he wants to dual boot.

Re: Is it worth moving to 64bit yet

remember that 64-bit drops support for 16-bit apps (due to a processor limitation, if memory serves) so you won't be able to install older apps, even win9x apps (whose version of installshield was partly 32-bit)

whether or not you care is another matter

While that's true I was just pointing out that "nobody" needing Ultimate wasn't quite true. I would agree that 95% of people who are running Ultimate would be equally well served with Home Premium though.

You can choose not to activate it during installation: giving you 30 days to make sure it works properly with your hardware and intended software before 'committing' yourself.

N.B. Well you'd struggle to return the software but at least if it didn't work out you could freely try installing it on another machine.

Re: Is it worth moving to 64bit yet

ya guess you could use it for 30 days, format, and try to re use for another 30 days, but obviously that would be a pain in the a$$. For most people i think Vista Home Premium 64 would be enough, the Vista Ultimate "features" are quite lacking at the moment.. (plus VhPrem is only like £69 quid oem 64 bit)

nothing says "non-abusive manner" like "go get a life"

for the record, my advice is both sound and non-abusive too. it's entirely matter of fact.

there was a kerfuffle about getting around the expletive filter and excessive use of colorful euphamisms. i'm just offering sound non-abusive advice, apparently

Now now - I expect better from you.. I agree his comment (as read) wasn't helpful but you hardly came off as mature with your response. Neer mind lad.

I think I'd put the exchange in the 'robust banter' class rather than the 'abusive' category! Made me smile anyway! (Certainly felt that they were made tongue -in-cheek)

Perhaps i'm just shocked - Directhex is a bright chap and doesn't normally need to stoop to an (obvious) expletive to make his point.

yes! You licence is tied to a copy of windows [version], not 32 vs 64 bit. They grey area is getting the other install medium. I was I suspect slightly naughty and created an .iso of a friends CD, which Microsoft probably claim is 'just one theft' - if you get the retail package they'll send you a new CD if you pay them an inflated price.

Really if you have a CD key I don't see why they don't let you download the .isos. My office '07 was bought online and they let me download it, I can burn it to CD do whatever - I've got my own licence key so it's not an issue of piracy. The pirates have shown if they're determined they will get round it - you can even run vista without activation! I've no doubt in the future it will come to some kind of thing like steam for operating systems, and you'll just download them, then choose which one to boot into.

I'm running 64 bit atm and bought 32 bit oem.
