Getting Vista 32 is like getting a Fararri with a Corsa engine. If that answers your question.

The Fararri isn't much use if you can't take on the motorway though

As this is going to be a HTPC based / Media Centre setup sadly there are some 64bit issues. As I said previously, I tried to get Vista64 as I wanted it running MC for the best part of 3 days. The codecs and tools to change back-end settings are just not available. Although if you do want to take each of my previous points and prove me wrong I'm more than happy to hear them

    Re: 32bit vs 64bit Vista

That only applies if you use 64bit media players, 32bit media players can still use the old codecs. It's a sad situation, I know, but it still works.

    Re: 32bit vs 64bit Vista

And with no 32bit version of Media Centre being included with Vista 64 (and no way to fall back to it unlike WMP), thats a bit of an issue

    Re: 32bit vs 64bit Vista

WMC sucks anyway, it can't even handle DVB-S streams. There are better alternatives out there.

    Re: 32bit vs 64bit Vista

Vista WMC is excellent IMO. I've been very impressed by it. In fact, its the primary TV in our house now.

You can get DVB-S in WMC, but its time consuming and not very user friendly.

Hopefully Fiji will come out in a reasonable timeframe though and solve the few things that are really missing (like interactive services).
I tried a few alternatives like Media Portal but was never fully happy with it. What did you have in mind?

Media Portal is one, not using Windows is another.

    Re: 32bit vs 64bit Vista

Which means for a lot of people learning a new OS. A bit extreme if someone just wants a media centre surely?

I've been 'learning' Linux for about a year now on and off, and I certainly wouldn't be confident setting a Linux based machine up for TV use currently

Mythbuntu is pretty straight forward to set up.

Set up? Yup. But if something goes wrong and you're dumped at the CLI at a later date its a different matter.

    Re: 32bit vs 64bit Vista

You'd need a new/'upgraded' license and 64bit install media at least.

In which case you would need to buy a new 64 bit license and media - you're only eligible for the alternative media if you bought the retail license.
