    Google Mail - Anygood?

Currently using Outlook 2007 and hate it. Its so slow over outlook 2003.

I am looking at getting a quick way to get my emails but also use the outlook features such as addess book and calender.

I am looking at Gmail but I can't find out if you can actually download your emails to your computer, into a simple program or something..

    cheers

Google mail is excellent - vast amount of storage (7GB) and I've never had an issue (been using for around 2 years).

You can either use the web client or use IMAP / POP3 to download it into a standard email client (Outlook)

Using Gmail won't help you if you want to download your emails using IMAP or POP3, as opposed to just using the web interface - you'll still need a client to fetch them.

If Outlook 2003 worked well for you, is there any reason you couldn't switch back? Or perhaps you could try Thunderbird with the Lightning extension?

Personally, I wouldn't use Google mail because of the privacy issues with it. It may well not bother a lot of people, but I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

I've got a throwaway googlemail address from them, but what I really like google for is their calendar, it really is excellent.

There are no Gmail privacy issues except those thought by my frothing tinfoil wearing loonies.

I don't like the idea of leaving my mail on a web server somewhere. I want to have it all on my computer. So to do this I still have to use the likes of outlook.

We use thunderbird at work and this works well. But again, aren't the emails stored on a web server, or in an office environment a server.

Such as keeping all your e-mails for analysis even after you delete them, automatically scanning e-mails and adding contacts to the GChat interface, and best of all, being able to get spam e-mails coming in without even using the e-mail address anywhere.

    Re: Google Mail - Anygood?

What I like about Gmail over other web clients I know of (Yahoo, Lycos, Hotmail) is that it support SSL for the whole session (and not just for log-in). This is quite handy when using public wireless connections.

What I don't like about Gmail, is that it breaks/corrupts Mac Word attachments. Not sure if they've fixed it now, but it was still a problem when I last tried a few months ago. And I still prefer 'folders' than the 'label' system used in Gmail.

Anyway, I think it's worth having an account if only to use on the go (when travelling etc.).

Ah, that, I suspect it's not Gmail's fault. I think that's more to do with spammers targeting Gmail accounts. If you have a 'complicated' email name, you'll probably find no spam mail at all. But I am pretty certain that John.Smith@gmail.com (or even a less common name) will have thousands of spam from day one.

At least that's how it work for me. I've got a Gmail account that is as squeaky clean as it comes, so I doubt Google go around giving away/selling your email address.

    Re: Google Mail - Anygood?

Been using Gmail for well over a year now and I absolutely love it. 7Gb of storage and I've only used up 47Mb of it!!

I highly recommend using IMAP over POP3 if you decide to set up a client to use for it instead of the browser-based site. The spam filter is also excellent and easy to use.

I'm not a fan of Outlook 2007 either so I use Thunderbird instead. Could be worth looking into:
    http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird

    Hope that helps.

EDIT: For all the people saying the email is still all stored on a webserver somewhere. Yes, that's true with all the most widely used protocols like Exchange, IMAP, POP3 etc. However, only POP3 by default moves all emails locally to your computer unless you tell your client not to. I'm also sure that as soon as you delete an email locally it's also deleted on the server, at least with IMAP and POP3 it does anyway.

Basically, like webmail where it doesn't need to be stored on the local machine, but via a native desktop application.

They have only recently implemented this, but I always forced it myself using a firefox addon.
