Can't run Half Life 2 on Windows 7

I had a similar issue to this with another game, the game would open, then close when i tried joining a server or whatever. Eventually I found that turning off the steam community solved the problem.

This seems to be a bit dead, but I thought I'd update for posterity's sake. Basically a reboot solved all the problems, got everything else reinstalled and working fine. I also had some sound problems which seem to have been narrowed down to HL2 not supporting 5.1 under Win 7. Episodes 1 & 2 do, which is strange.

I was using the disc because, believe it or not, I keep those, and even on a 20 meg connection it's a damn sight faster than downloading the whole thing

Doesnt take long to download any of them, especially if you have one of the games downloaded, they share the cache.
