I absolutely hate, with a pasion, Lotus Notes.
Can anyone justify it's existence ?
I'll go and get angrier now

age, at the time it was great, nice diary tools, good regarded as "secure" email.
why its still around now i've no idea.
throw new ArgumentException (String, String, Exception)
to make any alternatives look good
nasty unintuitive interface both client and admin side
its stinky.

Lotus Domino/Notes is a very useful groupware application. Most people just use it for email and don't get to use it to its full extent. Implemented properly it is a great collaborative tool for any number of different business applications.
I agree the interface isn't the best but from version 5 upwards it was more web based and could be customised.
Up for another Notes argument at the weekend Chris
I'd like to add that is smells of pooh, and that.....frankly...is that
Seriously though....I don't pick things up too well, being old and doddery
And this proves it beyond a doubt.
However...it FEELS OLDER THAN ME !!!

I want to know why Outlook exists when there are programs such as Lotus Notes available
Notes is not just an email client, though most organisations use it as one. It is a fully fledged database package, with customisable interfaces (if you are a developer)
1 example: I used to work at xxx, where we uesd Lotus Notes. Some people used a custom written diary package, an interface to notes was written for it, (looked just like another notes icon) that allowed this diary to be read in Notes - the upshot - people could then sync their PDA's with a old, non-standard app. I see no other PDA to custom DB package, and that would of been impossible in outlook. (atleast at the time)
Oh and if that doesn't convince you, MS are the devil. There
I could go one.
Notes can be a PITA, but no more than outlook.

Lol, this is like the discussion I have with a guy at work regualy.
I've always prefered Notes to outlook, but I mainly used Notes so i guess it's just what you are use to. I'm quite sure why people think the interfase it's intuative, it's just different to MS apps but everything is in a logical place.
I have worked for some rather large clients who all use Notes, most of who have some very cleaver Databases. As Nox said it's not just email.
I have to say I prefer the admin client Notes to Exchange admin, maybe just because I'm used to it more, but it was always easier to see what was going on with notes.

The only time i've even seen Notes (never used it) was in Statoil in Norway. It looks *horrible*! they do use it for kinda goupware email (email stores shared between all the department managers on a perticuler set of oil platforms) bit it just looks hugely over complicated.
Oh dear god I can't believe some are coming out in support for Notes... It's one of the worst applications i've ever come across - it's eats memory, it redefines slow (on a P4 3.2HT) and has a UI which is is a textbook illustration in 'hot not to do it'.
I never thought i'd miss outlook so much, but i do.

No, it isn't. Not even a bit. Hotkeys don't exist for most functions, to configure the darn thing you have to hunt in all sorts of weird places, F5 actually logs you out (how lazy were they not to implement decent key mappings for Windows users), error messages are pure comedy (like the one you get when you location is set wrong) with no real clue as to what's wrong, it's full of horrible bugs (file could not be created for my sig every so often, and restarting it fixes it), it's not dual monitor aware so attachment properites open on the wrong bleeding monitor... I'll stop now before i have a coronary
If I were to produce this for our customers i'd expect flaming torches and pitchforks massing outside my office! I'll tell you something else, I have a friend at IBM who hates it just as much (and it's their product)
I'm sure it has it's merits from an admin's point of view (otherwise why the heck do we use it) but as a desktop application it's so bad it's embarassing.
i've been on notes for 2 years (no option here), and its not *too* bad once you get used to all the idiocyncracies..
hughlunnon@yahoo.com | I have sigs turned off..
Notes 4.6 ran absolutely fine 5+ years ago on pentium 166-233's... (the average desktop at the time where I worked...) I will agree 5 is a bit of a hog though
And having a key that logs your security credentials out is bad?
If people are only using it for emails, then I can see your point. But thats kind of like using a 21 ton lorry to deliver a pint of beer. ie, a waste, unless the beer is arriving at my door in the next 5 mins - save me getting wet.

and over 7 years for me across two companies !
