    Unhappy Installing Linux

I decided to put linux on my brothers computer just for curiositys sake. I downloaded Ubuntu fine, burnt it to disc and whacked into my brothers computer but it just comes up with "disk boot failiure".

Do I have to call the cd anything in paticular? Do the files have to be in another file or can they just be loose on the cd?

    Any ideas?
    With love and many thanks,

    Melons

    Hi,

Make sure you burnt the ISO properly (don't extract the ISO, use a program to burn the physical ISO).

Also, make sure your PC is booting from CD.

    Craig.

Thanks. This is sooooo confusing. I'm trying to instal stuff and it sez comandline this and download that. agggghhhh

When you partition your hard drive, can you store things in the unpartitioned space?

On second thoughts, could someone tell me how to partition my hard drive (its 250gb) as I have no ideo what I'm doing

You can just follow the guided partitioning. If you're just trying things out, then you can just have your root partition (that would be /) on one partition (about 5GB+), and a swap partition.

Okay, now I've really bummed up! I tried doing the first one on here but I went and put in the wrong resulution (it wouldn't auto-detect so I had to do it manually)! So now I have no display. I tried using the recovery mode and put the comand in again, but it says "no such file or directory". Is there a vga safemode of some kind?

    You mean you can't run

    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
    ?

    If that doesn't work, try

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg

if you expect people to be able to help you with technical problems, you need to be detailed and explicit:

    1) what precisely did you do
    2) what was the expected outcome
    3) what was the desired outcome

without answers to the three above, you can't be helped. "it" is never a useful word to use - *what* gives an error? what did you type to cause the error? what were you hoping to achieve?

Sorry, I didn't explain myself properly (to behonest I wasn't sure what I'd done myself). As I had only just put the OS on I just reinstaled it and started again. Basicly I'm not getting the right screen resolutions but that howto should fix it.

While we're on the subject, can anyone tell me if there is a limewire equivalent for linux?

LimeWire? I presume you mean the:

peer-to-peer file sharing client for the Gnutella network.
If you're looking for a Linux equivalent of LimeWire, try... LimeWire (my emphasis):

To facilitate installation for casual users, installation packages are available for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and in the RPM format for Linux
Unfortunately, to use the RPM you'll need to use alien. However, a quick look on Wikipedia finds this: Gtk-gnutella. It's in the Dapper repositories, so getting hold of it shouldn't be a problem.
