    Re: Need help losing weight?

Swimming was the prime factor in losing a couple of stone for me recently. I lost a lot of weight through swimming back in about 96 / 97, then started gradually putting weight back on again from 2002 onwards. I tried everything to try and lose it again last year apart from swimming, as I admit I was too embarrased to whip my moobs out in public After failed diets and no success with cycling, rowing, treadmill, weights etc. I bit the bullet and got in the pool once or twice a week (all be it at times when it was quiet!). Hey presto, pretty much instant results, and for the first time in about 5 years I'm now considered "normal" on the medical weight charts.

I guess different things work for different people, but definitely give swimming a go.

I agree with JimNastics. Swimming works your whole body. Running is also good but you gotta do the time. No point in walking for 20 mins. You need to run.

Forget cross trainers they dont do anything. Rowing is good but you need to have good posture or you will hurt your back.

Skipping. I skip for 3 minutes, and try and get 10 reps in, with alternate 20 press ups, 20 sit ups, 20 star jumps or burpy jumps inbetween.

I do it at the gym but anyone can do it - it's free except a rope.

    And it'll do you in!

    Re: Need help losing weight?

Hey there, I'm a Personal Trainer (new to the forum though!), and thought I'd tell you about a program I use for my clients.

Fitday happens to be one of the best free services I could hope for as a trainer (google it, as I'm new it won't let me post an URL understandably), and is really easy to use. Whilst qualifying I used something called Dietmaster, and decided that fitday is so much easier to go with.

It's kind of like weightlossresources, but is a little more comprehensive in my mind, as well as free. Hope it helps!

Any specific dietary or exercise questions, just give me a shout, I'd be happy to help.

    Cheers,

    Danny

    Re: Need help losing weight?

Ok Danny let's see if you're not a spammer!
I used to box to keep in shape - recently injured my achilles heel and am unable to ski/run for prolonged periods of time.

I want to lose weight at the moment as it's come on (not a lot, but a stone lighter would be excellent and when I get back boxing, will make my life easier).

Now as leg stuff is out I've been thinking about using a body builders CUT routine.

    1) Am I right in thinking this can help me lose weight, whilst not building too much muscle?
    2) What would a good routine be?
    3) What would a good diet be for it?

    Re: Need help losing weight?

Heya, yeah FitDay is American, but is still in mho one of the best, most relevant services out there if you're looking to be as accurate as you can be without physically counting the calories yourself.

Bazzlad, there are a few things I'd want to know:

Do you have access to CV machines, such as rowers, bikes and maybe arm-bikes? Are they an option to use in terms of the injury?

Now, in terms of resistance, do you currently train with weights at all? One of the best things about strength training is the fact that the more lean muscle you have, the higher your metabolism, therefore the more calories you burn, even at rest, which would aid in your weight loss. One of my training partners boxes a lot, and recently injured his knee, which was kind of a blessing in disguise, as he concentrated more on strength training and looked all the better for it.

Nutrition when 'cutting' is obviously hugely important, as is the fact that you do train imo by most mostly compound exercises (squats if your ankle would hold up, clean and jerk, bench, military press, etc).

Many people when trying to lose weight get one fundamental thing wrong - simply neglecting to eat will help you lose weight to an extent, but you will lose lean muscle as well as bodyfat. When a deprivation diet inevitably fails (believe me, I've trained hundreds of clients and have not heard of one person who has not reverted post-'diet') they will be in a worse position than when they first started, ie lower metabolic rate.

Meals must be small but regular, and in order to ensure your metabolic rate stays the same or improves, it is essential to keep protein intake high. The key to effective cutting lies in careful manipulation of your intake of carbohydrate foods, i.e. carbs should be low, but not omitted as many people believe - thanks to the bull**** industry hatefigure Dr Atkins put forward. Consume complex starchy carbohydrate foods regularly such as pasta, rices and bread, but in small portions only. You will also have to be that little bit stricter in avoiding treats and junk food.

Following a meal plan high in protein, (fish, esp tuna, skinless chicken breast, cottage cheese) should give a steady loss of body fat, and if you are training at a good intensity, you will gain some muscle too from experience, how much you want to depends on how hard you train, so if as you said you're not looking to put on much, I'd probably stick to a few times a week just to retain/slightly improve lean mass.

As I said, if you could get on some CV machines, it'd be all the more beneficial.

Hope this helps a little bit, give me another shout if not!

Yeah I have access to all three of those.

I don't use, nor have any experience in using weights - I'm figuring the weights is a good option for me, but to me honest, I'm more than a little worried about doing it right/not over doing it!

Pushing the boat out here, but do you have an example diet you've given to a client, like a weeks worth? - I could use a good base to work off!

Thanks for the help - I'll start looking into putting a dry weights circuit together!

    Re: Need help losing weight?

You should read Men's Health and Men's fitness.

Not eating puts your body in starvation mode. Your body thinks that food is scarce so when you do eat your body stores it as fat.

Normally diets don't work because when you loose a certain amount of weight most people end up going back to their old habbits and put the weight back on.

Lifting heavy weights burns of more fat than running. this is because your metabolism increase and stays increased throughout the day, long after you finished your session.

Getting more sleep helps. This is because when you have less sleep your body produces more of a chemical that makes you hungry.

Be wary of low fat food. Most products replace the fat with sugar which your body stores as fat anyway.

Eat breakfast. Eat less more often.

Look at what you eat and look at ways to change your eating habbits in the long term.

These magazines are good. The educate you and help you acheive your goals.

Yup, this is true, but no one is suggesting this... To lose fat you need a calorie defect...

Just some people here suggested that you should eat less. I'm just pointing out that going hungry won't help much.

I will check out that muscletalk.co.uk
