But Infinity Ward has dropped a hugh bomb for the PC version of MW2.

No dedicated servers for the game, it will use a quick matching system.

They also announced no dedicated mods either for the PC version. Makes it a little easier for me to get the 360 version.

PC Gaming always = competitive gaming and without servers this fails.

Increased game price.

Massive changes to the part of the game I'm most likely to play.

No demo, despite them knowing they were going to do this, and still no talk of one in the future.


Having just listened to the entire webcast from bashandslash (linked on Kotaku) there are some things that sound like noble intentions, but quite frankly, I have to wonder how well this system is going to work, and how they're going to sell it.

They rate a matchmaking system as being a good new feature, but in all my years of online gaming I've never found such things to ever be particularly good when compared to having a full list of servers and a set of filters combined with manual input (that said, there is never a guarantee that whatever the developer implements will actually be any good in the first place). Even recent implementations, like Left 4 Dead, have their drawbacks - I remember one instance of having bypass the system by going into the console to force a connection to one of the servers from one of my steam group's lists, in order to get it to even find a server to play on in peak time. It was supposed to prefer group servers automatically if you set it right but never did.

Also that petition is growing at an alarming rate...

Heard about this earlier, severely disappointed.

One thing that's always set apart PC games from their console counterparts are dedicated servers. On consoles, it makes sense to have a matchmaking type system, but on a PC there's just no excuse for having it. One of the huge features of most online pc games is the user created content. You just have to look at TF2 to see how amazing some mods can be (balloon race being a favourite of mine). Taking this away, along with dedicated servers, is a huge kick in the teeth to pc gamers.

This was on my maybe pile, but I think I'll give it a miss now.
