    World of Tanks

Wargaming.net company (Order of War, Massive Assault) has announced a new on-line action World of Tanks. The game is a combination of such genres as the third person action, FPS, RTS, RPG, and the simulator. The developers promise highly detailed tank models, hardcore battles, and, most importantly, the atmosphere of shoulder-to-shoulder fights with brothers-in-arms against a well-organized enemy. Found on the worldoftanks website.

    Re: World of Tanks

If you like tanks, you'll love World of Tanks. It's tanktastic! All your Russian and German favourites (Panzer II, III and IV, Panther, Tiger, T-34, KV-1, JS-2, amongst many others), tank destroyers and SPGs (Marder, Hetzer, Wespe, Hummel, the SU- series and more) and a bunch of unusual/experimental/prototype stuff on top (T-43, VK3001, Maus). On most of 'em you can upgrade the gun, turret, engine etc. as well.

After a while it bogs down a bit into an XP grind to research improved components and vehicles, but for an early beta it's a great start.

Also have been playing this over the last few weeks, really enjoy it, something pretty much new and different. Guess thats why i like it, i hope they dont release it with loads of premium content though i think that would spoil it.

    Re: World of Tanks

Going to try and this another go as I never started last time. The little videos make it look fun and it seems safer than the crysis 2 demo.

I'll try it and then get uber. anyone interested in giving it a go; could be a good team game!

    Re: World of Tanks

I gave it a try in closed beta and it never really floated my boat, group of tanks charge into middle, most die 1/2 left chasing each other around, rinse & repeat.

    Re: World of Tanks

I've been playing this on and off since the closed beta. It is good to see how far it has come. I can't play it alot though. I'm not very good at it, and it takes a long time to make progress, and I don't have the time. I have several tanks going at the same time so you can hop from game to game when you die.
The sound has improved a lot since the early days, as have the graphics, but I think it still looks dated, and the one thing I'd like to see is proper destructible environments! I mean, we're driving tanks around! A few fences and some buildings are a little breakable, but Frostbite it ain't.

I currently have a Russian T34 fully up to spec and I want to get to the T34-85, but its going to take me ages to get the XP needed. I also use a Russian AT-1, I think it is, fully spec'd up. That is quite fun.

    Re: World of Tanks

The not 'I'm very good bit' has put me off crysis 2 demo for a bit sometimes I manage to break even or go slightly ahead 8/6 for example and other times I'm 2/12 down. There are some exceedingly good players though and not enough worse than me!

Its depressing when you ahven't got time but the XP things sounds a little grinding. I have it to instal lnow so I need some time to play!

I can be a bit depressing! And it is about grinding really. The tech-tree is pretty involved; they've paid a lot of attention to historical detail and accuracy. It is a nice feeling though when you get to slap on your new gun barrel, and buy bigger ammunition, then watch as you obliterate a smaller tank in the next game!

    Re: World of Tanks

It looks interesting and sort of reminds me of conqueror (a very old game originally on the Archimedes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p04EZboXc5M )

Wondering whether or not to bother, saw some very good videos posted by commiecat
    http://www.youtube.com/user/CommieCat
Does look very good and interesting to see that the hit location is very important in actual penetration.

    Re: World of Tanks

Had a blast and it was a bit tough to start. Feels like a tractor sim with the low level tank and you die within a minute! Definately dog eat dog.

After 30mins I figured out you need to spend xp on research and then you can buy the stuff you unlocked. With a boosted tank it is so much better. Looking foward to getting a light tank with something bigger than a pop gun!

    Re: World of Tanks

Same here, although I watched the tutorial videos first, so I had more of a clue

Been struggling and upgrading the freebe tanks (ussr and usa) managed to unlock the light tank, whoopie! it's 12,500 credits I've been making about 1,000 per game but spending it on upgrades.

You can speed things up if you work on more than one tank, basically join a match, fight, if you die before the end, you can quit the match back to the garage, you cannot use that tank again until the game you where in ends, but you can select another tank and join a new game even while the first is still going on.

I died really early on one game, the start point are close together with a big empty field between them, I tried to get to the buildings on the edge for cover only to find the enemy where already camping there . . .
well at least I exposed the enemy positions

Started a new game, did quite well not steaming off ahead of everyone but with a couple of others working our way up one side, I even managed to score a critical hit on an enemy tank
almost at the enemy control point, when we get shot at and the friendly tank behind me swerves and returns fire, in swerving he drove behind me and yes friendly fire does seem to be on.

Still that end ended pretty quickly, got back to garage to find my other tank still unavailable because the first game was still going on.

ps don't try driveing up a hill in the starting tank it's really really painful, I'm sure I saw a snail overtake me.
