    Two faulty HDDs in one order?

    Seems I spoke to soon in my praise Scan thread, (see here) although this isn't Scan's fault at all.

    I bought two Samsung 750Gb HDDs. Slapped them in my new Synology DS408 and waited for it do its magic. Only it didn't do it, it got halfway through formatting the drives before telling me they were unrecognisable. I tried again, same error.

    After 6 hours of dicking around I decided to put them into a PC and have a look at what was going on. I used ActiveSMART, HDTune and Everest and got the same SMART error with each program.

    (B8) Unknown Failure imminent
    See this gallery of screenshots for more info - Gallery of Samsung failure - they look identical but they are two separate drives (see the serial numbers A02154 and A02136).

    Am I right in thinking Scan would just run the Samsung ES-Tool to test the drives? I'm going to run it myself tomorrow but I want to be sure before RMAing these.

    Ta in advance

    Re: Two faulty HDDs in one order?

    Just put these in two different desktops at work and both come up with the following at boot;

    Code:
    1720 S.M.A.R.T. Hard Drive detects imminent failure (Failing Attribute: #184)
    I'm going to run the Samsung diagnosis tests in a bit and update accordingly.

    Re: Two faulty HDDs in one order?

    ...he's back, replying to his own thread again

    Samsung's ES-tools show "Service Code => AJ26 - SMART Error"

    A look around some forums shows this to be a media error and if someone from Scan could just pop in here to confirm, I'll be RMAing them today.

    Two in one order sucks

    I've raised an online Returns Query, we'll see how it goes.

    Re: Two faulty HDDs in one order?

    So far so good.

    I formatted part of the drive, stuck windows on it then formatted the rest. No issues reported in SMART.

    The serial number is A02097 so not far from yours.

    I'll be crossing my fingers this turns out to be an isolated incident. I don't want another DeathStar..

    Re: Two faulty HDDs in one order?

    Bump.

    I seem to have, erm, forgotten my OLQ number (I thought I'd get a confirmation email after submitting the OLQ, but it would appear not). How can I check on the progress of the OLQ.

    I need these drives in order to make any headway on the project I've got to do. If it means ordering two more, then I'll do that, but I'd like to know what to do first

    Thanks.

    Re: Two faulty HDDs in one order?

    Well, they are samsung drives so the easiest and quickest (from experience and what scan said to do when I called them) is to go to www.rexo.co.uk - register - and fill in the appropriate details and follow the instructions. You'll have to pay for posting the drives - will be about £2.80 per item (depending on your packaging) 2nd class recorded.

    (I did recorded as you need to make sure they get them)

    (That reminds me, I need to PM a scan employee....)
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Do I not have to return them to the retailer though?

    Re: Two faulty HDDs in one order?

    Just to update this.

    I picked up that old device that used to be used before t'internet - the telephone - and spoke to someone.

    Got an RMA number as I waited and City Link are picking up the drives today.
