I think the point is, Darwin started out life as FreeBSD on vanilla i386, ergo, Darwin should run on vanilla i386. It would be like Ford starting a petrolium company by taking a community refinery from the community, warp it a bit, and then say that you could only use their petrol on ford car. It's Ridiculous how much the software industry warps copyright & contract law.

    Re: Leopard

What's interesting (and slightly bizarre) is that I've seen one guy from an Apple Reseller claim (on a private site) that his company already has the boxes, but isn't allowed to sell them until Friday evening. Given the context I find it unlikely that he's lying, but I can't believe that Apple managed to print, box and ship the final GM candidate in that time-frame.

This suggests that those who install Leopard on Friday will be greeted with a largish update and should be suitably prepared. There are already rumours going around that the retail disk differs to the 9A581 build that was the last one seeded out on ADC. I suspect that Apple sent a previous release to the printers in order to ensure they'd meet the October deadline and waited to announce the release until they were satisfied that they could deliver the final bug fixes via update.

I did it 4yrs ago as well, when Panther came out (10.3) as my machine shipped with Jaguar (10.2)
Says 404 error on that page coco

I've found the link now Apple (UK and Ireland) - Mac OS X Leopard - Up-To-Date

    Re: Leopard

Got Leopard. Quite disappointed. Feels really like a service pack rather than a new OS. Stacks are annoying compared to the way Tiger dealt with folders in the dock, and Spaces are pretty much useless. Also hate the say the Apple logo is now black and what they've done to iCal. I hope they'll fix all this. I do like what they've done with Finder, however.

Have to agree with budding . I've just installed it and I was expecting more.

I've had a quick play nothing more but currently I'm not convinced yet.

    Re: Leopard

Well, so much for me waiting a month. After reading that people had installed it without problems for the major apps I use I gave in and got myself a copy.

Spent a couple of hours making 3 separate backups of my Tiger install (1 bootable on an ext disk and 2 disk images on a different volume) and discovered I had APE installed (probably from playing around with something a while ago) which I scraped off. Then tried a simple upgrade install without printer drivers or languages. To my amazement it took little more than 30mins. There's a blue-screen pause on the first reboot that seems to be related to enumerating the hardware, but it lasted less than a couple of minutes for me.

QuickLook is far more useful than I thought it would be and scrolling through all your fonts in coverflow is just fun . Spaces is a life-saver for my laptop screen and will reduce my habitual clutter immensely. I agree that the cascading dock menus are a loss (though I've had my fill of huge cascading menus in XP), but won't affect me much. The changes to the Finder in general are a definite improvement.

So far I have to say I'm impressed, it does indeed feel like a new machine, though I still need to test a lot of stuff.
