Choosing a new car...RX-8?

Just wondering what you guys thought of the Mazda RX-8 (or if anyone owned one) for a happy go lucky chap. I currently have a C2 VTR and fancy something less chavvy and bit more sporty so could RX-8 be it or am I missing something, I also like the idea of turning Japanese.

It would be black or silver and probs automatic (I know but have just got lazy since the VTR semi box!)

Any info and/or opinions and/or abuse welcome!

Crap fuel economy, high oil consumption, not much headroom....but apart from that, it's a nice car. All the mags seem to rate the 350Z higher than it though.

you get crap fuel economy from most in this market. Especially when you consider the 350z is a 3.5 V6.

The high oil consumpition and titanium valves were bad on the early ones and the more recent releases (circa 2006>) have both these issues resolved.

Headroom wise its not that bad either.

I looked into getting one, but it was more expensive and alot less fun than my Zeeee

Dont expect them to set the world on fire either, theyre quick, but not astonishingly so. Are you buying brand spanking new? As i dare say theres plenty that have just been pootled to and from work by middle aged women while their husband takes the x5/eclass/A6 off to work.

Well, the RX-8 is one of the best cars ever devised. Good value, awesome rear space (I FIT....I'm 6'1") average boot, good handling, looks the dogs....

ok....check the oil a lot and it's gonna use more petrol than other cars it's money....

BUT....what else in the world IS there with such cool doors, and such good space? Nowt.

I went to a wedding in onelast year, and in the back with my missus, we were very comfortable and it was a class act.

Both engines sell in equal numbers, because of clever marketing by Mazda, when the 190 bhp started to slow in sales, they launched a special edition.

but they don't come with a lazy (auto) gearbox, they come with one of THE best 6speed manual gear changes I've ever used!!

the missus wants an s2000. she wants one a lot. bugger to insure though, and not cheap O_o

i just couldn't justify the £1k+

Mind you i seem to remember RX8's were cheap to insure, around £400 iirk

Matt, that's quite a startling difference for two very similar cars, performance wise. If anything I'd have expected the BMW to cost more due to parts prices, etc.

Yeah well I'm only 26 so I thought it would be a step in the right direction and it seems I'm right, I wouln't be buying new because I could no way afford that but looking to pay around 10k in a years time. Fuel economy I am not so worried about I only do about 5 miles to work and same back with 5.1 miles back on a Friday! The 350z is too expensive really though it was my first choice, Z4 is out of my league as is tt roadster and the roadster looks like a bubble car. I think I would get different wheels for the RX-8 (maybe an inch bigger). Also should seem like a good car coming from a C2 VTR which is good but now I want a bit sporty.

What colours do you guys think? Everyone has said to me something different! I know its early days but I'm a planner (not obsessive but like to have something basically mapped out).
