bigger version here (649kb)

I will try with the washing up liquid later today.

whats the easiest way to check the boost pressure? (VAG-COM?)
Big pipe winding from the right of the pic right round to the silver topped bit on the left - check all clips on this and feel for any tears etc (feel as you'll need to reach round the back of the pipe too). Presumably the air box is on the right of the pic (clipped off on the image). Air box->turbo->intercooler->inlet manifold is the pipe run and all pipes will be of similar size and (as shown) much larger than anything else you see. If you do the fairy liquid trick then do it when it's cold - else evaporation will remove the evidence
Try not to let it warm up etc. I think you'll be able to see the turbo on the left there towards the bottom of the engine bay (looks like a snails shell - spiral shaped). The turbo is fed by the exhaust gases coming ouf the the engine (spins the turbo) which then draws in the air through the air intake pipe (from the airbox) and spits it out into the intercooler (which cools the air down - air heats up when pressurised) which then feeds it into the inlet manifold. Pipes carrying exhaust gases are metal (or they melt lol) whereas air pipes will be rubber compound (i.e. black)

Check your airfilter too - has it been serviced etc in logbooks?

Cool, I'll have another look later. The air filter is in the curvy black box on the left, behind the metal shield. I replaced that myself the other day, but it didn't make much difference.

Checked pipes and they seem ok, no noticable leaks or damage or cracks as far as I can tell, and now my engine's lemony fresh

There is a cable attached to a bosch thing on the big pipe at the back, is this some kind of sensor?

The bosch sensor at the back on the big pipe is the boost pressure sensor. I will try take it to a VW place this week - anyone know of any in Liverpool apart from Corkhills?

Well... there's Corkill's Southport, Corkill's Wigan or Liverpool Volkswagen (which used to be Corkill's IIRC). Failing that, there's Dutton Forshaw in Blackpool & Preston. Those came up in a search for VW bods that do servicing, using the in-law's postcode, in Burscough.

Thanks, I disconnected the Bosch sensor on the turbo pipe at the back and this made little or no difference (might have made it worse?). I also checked this and it was pretty oily - is this normal?

I disconnected the MAF sensor at the front left on the big pipe coming out of the air-filter box and this improved the car noticably, ie much more free revving, 16.8sec 0-60 and car went 92% of manufacturers top speed (although it could have been the wind?). Still not as quick as manufacturers spec but seems MUCH better, so presumably it is the MAF sensor?

About 2200? Warm it up, lift the air box up, get someone to pick it up to a couple of thousand RPM and jet a metric ton of carb cleaner down it.

Should be able to just disconnect the EGR on it aswell Watch you get the right one though.

yeah sounds like it. try giving the old one a clean, after all, you've nothing to loose

a specialist should be able to read what the maf is throwing out whilst you drive along, and work out if thats sensible or not

Cool, I'll give that a try, certainly sounds better than having to pay £90 for a new MAF Sensor.

What is the EGR?

it was always going to be the MAF... :/ good luck getting it fixed - mine was a re-con item (on the TT) fitted by the dealer for <£100 all in, with warranty

I've found on the last few I've attacked that plenty of cleaner has done the world of good. I'll find the brand name for you, but one actually jets out and vapourises nicely.

18 seconds isn't actually miles out, once you account for all the variables, like keeping the clutch in one bit

i'm not convinced egr would have any effect on a diesel, given that they avoid pinking entirely.. surely the system wouldnt exist on a derv?

It's on the TDi for emissions reasons. They quite often clog up on the VAG one, get stuck open and stall the car when it comes to a halt.

MAF is a common fault... infact in the USofA theyve extended the warrnty on the maf to 6 years or something!

The car would go into limp mode if there was a boost pressure leak.. but mafs can go faulty without throwing up codes.. See what the stealer wants for a replacement... if its too rich, another common "mod" is to get a pierberg MAF from merc dealer... only about 12 quid!
