OOps, didn't see page 3

The replacement MAF finally arrived! BUT stupidly I bought the wrong one (it wont physically fit)! I took the old one out and it was clogged with a number of tiny leaves and twigs, so I cleaned it with carbon cleaner and tried getting rid of as much stuff as possible, but it doesn't really seem to have made much noticable difference... so I may swap the sensor section of the MAFs... I just need to buy some security torx screws before I can do this

I replaced the sensor with the new one - and the performance increase was instantly noticable! It's much much MUCH better now - hooray!! It revs very quickly and accellerates very quickly!
Yay - thanks for all the help everyone

woo nice one
I'm guessing it feels much nicer (& more fun) to drive now?
If the MAF was clogged with leaves and twigs then the air filter is or was not fitted correctly, or an old one was damaged, or the engine has ran without an air filter.
Then un-filtered air has passed though the turbo and into the engine.
These are my thoughts but I could be wrong.
Still if it's ok now then no problems.

This was what was on the MAF sensor housing:
This shows how much junk was effectively stuck in the MAF sensor housing compared to a brand new one:
(I managed to get most of this out)
and this shows me putting in the new MAF sensor into the existing housing:

if that sits after the air filter (which it should) then that has been run without a filter at some point (as mentioned above) and i'd be very worried about what is floating about in the cylinders
hughlunnon@yahoo.com | I have sigs turned off..
It is definitely performing better, and now does 0-60 in 13 seconds (manufacturer says it should be 12 seconds) whereas previously it was doing it in 18 seconds.
Is there any (easy/cheap) way of cleaning the engine out of gunk? or should the service (oil change etc) take care of it?

My friends TDI (130) Passat had exactly the same problem with poor performance, so we tried my working MAF sensor in his and it fixed his problem, and performance was back to what it's supposed to be, so now he knows all he needs to do is buy a new MAF sensor and then he'll have a fixed car.
