Yeah MAF sensor is definitely a common faullt. When I bought my car the MAF was faulty and the car felt really slugish.
I've got one of the older non PD version TDi's. I replaced mine with pierberg MAF about 2yrs ago, cost around £30 compared with the £100+ for the original bosch one. Has been working perfectly since.
From what I've read though, it's not recommended for the PD engines.
Oh yeah and TDi's are really good engines, they go on for ever and give excellent fuel economy. Can get some pretty good power out of them by doing various thing like upgrading the injectors and remapping.
I did this, sprayed what seemed like a lot and the car seemed to rev itself, but i haven't noticed any improvement in performance. (I also managed to spray some on on the air-filter - doh!)About 2200? Warm it up, lift the air box up, get someone to pick it up to a couple of thousand RPM and jet a metric ton of carb cleaner down it.
I'm tempted to take the sensor out and try cleaning it outside of the car. But I've heard some of these MAF sensors are sealed? I think I'll give it a try anyway
Edit - here's a cleaner specifically for MAF sensor cleaning:

yea first thing wuld be is to check the map . culd be a previous dodgy remap ??
I've bought a new replacement MAF sensor off ebay for £10.50 (much better than the £90 that VW want!) - it should be arriving this week so I'll fit it and see if it fixes my problems

Good luck when it arrives, my girlfriend recently bought an A4 130bhp, had a simliar problem (was almost slower than my Land Rover!) and a new MAF Sensor (£60, independant specialist) cured it no problems. It's now a rocket!

PD? searched but couldnt find what it stands for or how it works..
Does it rely on compression/high voltage sparks/injection of a more flammable fuel/laser or some other random way of ignighting the mixture?
It stands for pump duese and i believe the difference to a common-rail engine is it has a pump feeding each injector rather than one pump feeding all the injectors.
It mentions it here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turbo_Direct_Injection
PD was VWs version of the "common rail" diesel engine, I think the most recent engines are no longer PD engines, but are now common rail diesels.
"The PD design was a reaction to the development of common rail fuel injection by competitors; an attempt by Volkswagen to create an in-house technology of comparable performance that would not require any royalties to be paid. However, while Pumpe Düse engines had a significantly higher injection pressure than older engines, they couldn't keep up with common rail and weren't able to control injection timing as precisely (a major factor in improving emissions). PD technology was abandoned, and new engines appearing as of 2006 are using the common rail technique with piezoelectric injectors."

I always remember it best from the Golf GT TDi PD 150 I got as a courtesy car. Ok the timing inside it may not have been perfect, but bloomin' hell it could shift itself when you planted it.

So it puts the fuel in at a slightly higher pressure using more pumps.... doesnt explain why theres no glow plugs...
