I have heard of young drivers getting a lower quote on larger cars with larger engines cars that you would associate with an older driver.

    Re: Car Insurance

Paid 574 in first year on a T plated Ford Focus 1.8TDDi (10 month policy with admiral WF15 Post Code) and am now on a 2l Mondeo 02 plate and it was 553ish for 12 months with admiral.

I will state this that the insurance quote system is broke imho; i think i will actually go to a insurance broker next time and see if that makes a difference.

    I pay $360 a year for my 4.0 V8 BMW. Just sayin'.

Combination of US, fixed insured amounts, and working in statistically the second lowest claims profession (after farmers, who live in the country, drive at 20mph and don't care if their cars get wrecked.)

    Re: Car Insurance

    Audi A4 1.9 TDi

first quote from my current insurer £1800 after a lot of hard pushing I got that down to £1300, I paid about £1100 last year ans £900 the year before that, no claims, no points, 6 years NCB.

Went online I can get it for £833 from another insurer.

What I dont understand here is why dont I get the best price first? Is there so little competition that they can just inflate their prices? How can they start at £1800 and manage to drop to £1300 in the space of a phone call? I think the government really need to look into this as its clear that we are being badly ripped off.

I find you simply have to play the system now - use an on-line price checker to get a few lowish quotes then go to the individual sites and adjust everything you can to lower the cost - if you're young add a driver (your mum or dad) even if they will never go near the car, also play with your job title etc everything - just make sure you could justify (just about!!) whatever options you go with - ie dont just put librarian as it gives the lowest quote !!

I also found that keeping the car in the garage is the most expensive and keeping on the street is the least, so my car now lives on the street so I can admire it out of the window. It's backwards to what I expected anyway.

It's also surprising what comes out cheap for insurance, I've just changed to a Nissan 350z as it's cheaper than I expected to insure. A ferrari 355 is relatively cheap to insure as they don't have big claims histories, quite a bit cheaper than a lower group subaru impreza for example worth a small fraction of the ferrari.

It's all a bit stupid to me, but stats can show anything. You just need to know how to play the game I suppose.

Which is all very well until you come to claim.

If you have lied or witheld any facts when taking out the insurance, there is a real risk that your insurance ckaim will be refused. If you have a claim, some of the asked for will be to verfy the data on the proposal.

And computer systems have long memories, how much of that massaging of information is recorded as history? I do know, but I'd be surprised if there wasn't some audit trail left behind. And don't forget that little disclaimer that says that your data may be shared with other companies to detect sand prevent insurance fraud!

By all means go for the best dealn but don't misrepresent or mislead - it may come back to haunt you!

This is why I did state you must be able to justify things, if you're say a network technican and have put electrician or engineer I would be most surprised if any judge would know the difference - you just have to be sensible.

A lot of the things you can change are just stupid in their impact - as others have said a garaged car is sometimes more expensive, third party dearer than comprehensive, etc.

If you are paranoid about audit trails just make up a mr nobody living next door to you with the same dob - when you have found the cheapest quote stick in your true details. I would be most surprised if they retain such data - it is often impossible to retrieve a past quote on many sites and you have to enter all your damn details again if you go back a week later.

It's not a case of 'what you think you can get away with' - that's fraud. It's imperative to pick the most correct term available. I struggle because they never have an accurate description, but I have to try the actual description and only when they have a problem with it and work through the available options with me do I choose the least inaccurate one.

I was paying just over £700 for my Fury, which I thought was pretty good for the performance. I've since turned 25 and got some quotes and it's dropped to £240. I thought the 25 year barrier was a myth.

    Re: Car Insurance

you just have to play the insurance game,
When i got my renewal quote this year after being with elephant for 2 years (i'm 24 now), its was £1400 to insure myself on my celica 190 (which i have had for 2 years), £1400 is about £500-600 more than what I paid last year, and i didnt have any claims (years 5 ncb now). 1 phone call to them after looking on comparision website they dropped it down to match the admiral one (of course they are the same company), but then i looked around on car forums, as there can be discounts. I called sky insurance (they are like insurance brokers), not only they beat the price, i am now paying about £100 less than i was last year, which is roughly about £780 now.
plus i live in a high risk area in london, which i thought isn't bad...
anyway roll on being 25 years old!

Yeah it sounds crazy - but if you think about it, if you are in a low car crime area this will probably be true..you are more likely to have an accident by bashing your car when putting it into the garage than you are to have it broken in to! Bit crazy but it does sort of make sense.
