    Re: AMD - Piledriver chitchat

Interesting comment in the TH GTX800M review:

    http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/geforc...-32935-11.html

This chart makes certain assumptions based on Origin PC's prices. More problematic, its results suggest that the rest of the notebook is free. The first diagram is more realistic, conveying that the biggest generational improvement happens going from GeForce GTX 770M to 870M. And that's probably the GPU I'd choose if I were spending my own money. It's adequate through our benchmark suite at the most demanding settings.

Of course, if you need even higher frame rates for 3D Vision or more taxing details in games like Metro: Last Light, you could always spend the few hundred extra dollars on the GeForce GTX 880M. That is, unless you'd like to wait for AMD's response.

    How's the ECC support?
I tried some UDIMMs in my Asus AM1 board, it would not post. The same UDIMMs work in multiple FM1/2 systems.

Might just be the board and/or BIOS but most likely ECC is not supported on these chips.

Wonder if that is worth a message to Asus tech support. I am sure I have read of hardware support intended for microserver/opteron use of Jaguar chips, and even if ECC isn't supported they should still work just without the ECC. Sounds like a straight bug in the BIOS to me. Having said that, whilst I like their motherboards the idea of using Asus tech support would fill me with dread so I wouldn't blame you for just leaving it

I have no idea about CPU die shots, but they are highlighting a fairly discrete part of the chip. My first thought was ARM sister processor? Or is it a modem and AMD is going mobile?

    Re: AMD - Piledriver chitchat

Hmm, well it doesn't look like memory/memory controller/repetitive logic like GPU. Maybe some sort of DSP/media engine?

It looks a bit big for an ARM security coprocessor, but is in the right ballpark for one of their big cores. Still, I'm not sure what purpose a single large ARM core would have next to x86 cores? I was thinking maybe the ability to switch between x86 and ARM 'modes' for multi-boot systems, but Android already runs on x86. Some weird franken-big.LITTLE configuration also came to mind, but I can't imagine how that would be realistic unless the x86 cores were emulating ARM code, in which case it probably just makes more sense to use ARM cores considering the emulation overhead.

I agree a modem could be a possibility, but that seems like a big jump for AMD, from barely scratching the surface of the mobile market to having a highly-integrated mobile SoC. Then again, it might be the sort of thing needed to gain some attention in the market, and it would certainly warrant the attention.

    Edit:

Oh, are they just alternating between chunks of the entire chip?

Edit2: Oh and if they just want us to guess what the whole chip is, well it looks a lot like one of their quad-core cat core parts. So yeah, Mullins/Beema as CAT said.

    Found this: http://wccftech.com/amd-drops-teaser...er-beema-apus/

Guess it might not be anything new-new (might still be! ) but certainly good to see more low power parts from AMD. Hoping Mullins comes first, I really want to see AMD's Nano come to fruition.

From that article "These will also feature two x86 PUMA Cores."

I'm assuming a typo, but I see four cores on that die, like Kabini/Temash...

Rats! Even so, I wish somebody would ask me soon to build something small, efficient and relatively fast (Kabini). So I can give a go to undervoltaging/underclocking and overclocking.

AFAICT only the ASUS boards have overclocking capabilities, and I've not seen much info about undervolting. I know the Biostar ones have custom p-states that may allow some reduction of voltage.

But tbh, given how cheap the chips and motherboards are, if you want to mess with one why not go for it? For the cheap dual core Sempron, a mobo and a 1GB or 2GB stick of DDR3 it's pretty much in impulse buy territory (about £60 for the lot?) and you could just have some fun with it then sell it on as a bundle - I reckon on ebay you'd just about make your money back if you sold it all together as a working bundle....

Thought there would be more choice by now though, but it looks like everyone is selling out of the motherboards and vendors have maybe one or two board types in stock.

Still waiting for that 65W FM2+ 7600K to turn up as well.

Yeah whats with that?! Its taking ages This repeatedly happens with AMD, takes so long for the products to hit the market, people are already looking for the next thing by the time they do.

    A8-7600.

It has been discussed a lot over at OCN about the delay. To be fair I don't think a lot of people will buy the 7850K considering the 7600 can do practically the same.

The only two CPUs AMD are selling from this silicon are high end ones. Are their yields really that good? Hats off to them if that is the case. I guess the not quite perfect ones are going to OEMs as the 7800, but that is still a quad core part. All very strange.
