There was a Crossfire rumour too. I wonder if they will use Kaveri with an HD8670 GDDR5??

    Re: AMD - Piledriver chitchat

Crossfire would make a lot more sense in a fixed spec console than it does in PCs. If they make it easy to program I could see in some games the dGPU being used for graphics while the APU's GPU gets used for physics or other effects. While in other games, the whole lot might be used just for graphics. After all, Microsoft are very good at providing development tools so such an architecture might be made very easy for developers.

Do wonder if now that Sony have revealed their hand, Microsoft might not want to beef up their console a bit because the rumours of APU plus at most Cape Verde is a lot weaker than PS4. Might be too late though.

crossfired 8670 , heavy multithread loading - looking good for AMD desktop cpu`s and gpu`s over the next few years

Probably far too late to change anything - stuff like CPU/GPU silicon would be essentially impossible to change if they hope to release this/next year, but simple stuff like HDD size might be changeable.

    Re: AMD - Piledriver chitchat

The rumours seemed to indicate multple chips with an HD6670 graphics card in Crossfire. Whereas an X86 CPU was not indicated,it does make sense if the developer kits were an A10 APU with an HD6670 card in Hybrid Crossfire.

It could be quite possible that Kaveri is used with an HD8670. It might explain why desktop and laptop Kaveri is rumoured to be compatible with GDDR5,and it might also be why it was delayed,ie,work was being done on the XBox too.

    Edit!!

I am making the assumption that Kaveri uses a 384 shader IGP.

It's not necessarily that simple with consoles; developers need to know what sort of hardware to aim for, circuits need to be re-designed, the lot would need to be re-validated etc. You can't do that in a few months based on a competitor's announcement.

    Re: AMD - Piledriver chitchat

Guess the only thing they could do so late is too see if they can get faster parts at the same TDP. So if for example they had chosen something similar to A10-5700 @ 65W, they could try and see if AMD are willing to sell them A10-5800K (+10% faster) but binned for mobile.

I'm sure it would cost them a fair bit more. But even then that's only viable if the APU they're using isn't custom because otherwise all the ones which can't reach that required TDP binning would have to be binned (sic).

Or they could crossfire with a bigger GPU. Never too late to upsell if it is a standard part I'm sure.

It would add delays and likely mean they'd be miles behind the PS4 release though.

    Re: AMD - Piledriver chitchat

If it doesn't change silicon availability or heavily impact software development, then really it wouldn't. Been on the receiving end of that as specs change around you, if the current spec is laughable compared to the PS4 then they wouldn't sell any so better to bite the bullet and delay. The trick is to minimise how many people have to deal with the impact.

It's highly unlikely they're using off-the-shelf silicon though, and even so, you still have validation and actual manufacturing to worry about.

I was reading about the TressFX hair effects on OcUK,and it seems the new game patch to improve performance on Nvidia cards, led to the effect being somewhat reduced on all cards.

Fair enough given the effect was apparently a bit OTT and let to quirky behaviour more often than not.

Also, the effects looked crappier, supposedly. It would be interesting to see if anyone with the game on Hexus(and a GCN card could confirm this though).

Plus,it seems there is a "slight" differing of opinion between AMD and Nvidia. Nvidia, complained that it had very late access to the code, just before release, whereas AMD stated they had a couple of weeks.
