Looks like you can have as much bad PR and charge as much as you like , if you have a strong brand name

There's no doubt that the PS3 will sell well. It'll pass the 360 given time.
Still it's good to know that people aren't making a quick buck

I still think its just too expensive
The figures are surely a bit iffy to outright claim it as the fastest selling console ever. Yes, technically it is - but there wasn't an even starting ground. The 360 was desperately low on stock when it was released, it may have only sold 70,000 units but it's a fair bet that that was the entire allocation given to the UK as most people I know weren't able to get one because of a lack of stock. If there had been 220,000 360s in stock the figure sold would almost certainly have been drastically higher, but MS didn't see the delay-for-months route to be the preferable choice. It's sort of like saying Car A has a limiter fitted and does 70mph, Car B does 165mph but has no limiter; therefore Car B is undoubtedly better because it went faster. Of course Car B will be faster, but it's an unfair comparison, remove the limiter from Car A and they're on equal footing - only then can a direct comparison be a fair one.
It would be interesting to know how many Wiis and 360s were available in the country at their respective launches, because to look at the figures as a % of allocation sold (a good measure of just how wanted the console is) I wouldn't be surprised if the Wii and 360 were ahead of the PS3

There was never any doubt that this would sell. PS1&2 were THE console back at the time, but saying that it was always the games that made the playstation, PS2 just doesn't have that yet.
impressive at that price, i wont be biting until they drop to £300.
you can buy a decent pc for the same price i kinda fail to see the point. There is no attraction whatsoever apart from being able to play final fantasy games.
how much ps3 where allocated in the uk?
200k+ iirc i think 272 but i dont know where i got that figure from lol
i doubt they sold 165,000 if UK was only allocated 200k because the ps3 is still widely available in most places including tesco!
maybe around 250k was allocated here...
I'm seriously struggling to believe those figures, having seen the amount of PS3s sitting in stock in every store I visited at the weekend. I'm absolutely staggered to now find out that precisely 75% of UK stock has been sold.
You do realise that 165,000 is exactly 75% of 220,000 don't you? Quite a strangely precise figure. Having spoken to a few people who work in Game and the like in town, they've definetly not sold 75% of their stock.
Maybe it's "we sold 75% of allocation to retail stockists" rather than to end-users
You'd have to assume the PS3 would sell anyway - but I expect sales to replicate the US - an initial rush by die-hards and then luke-warm sales thereafter. It's not like it's a bad console, just one overpriced for the target audience right now.
*sigh*

Measures sales via retailer's EPOS systems.
But then again it's Sony isn't it, so they must be faked/wrong/bribed etc..

yea me to, like i said, if thsoe figures are true then the UK must have been allocated a lot more than the 220k has mentioned because in every game shop i go to they have quit a few in stock
Kindof although just unreliable IMO, doesnt take into account any indie shops/ebay sales that aren't franchises of places like gamestation as some places still do not use EPOS, and I'll be b*ggered if I'm going to keep a log of each game I have sold
Doesn't account for items returned either I don't think
