I don't doubt the sales figures and I seriously doubt anyone is buying them for eBay, if they are, I can't wait to see the auctions, those guys are going to lose BIG. If I had an HDTV I would buy a PS3 because it's a BluRay player. I wonder how many of the buyers are have bought it for the player rather than the console.

No more than any other faceless monolithic corporation anyway I'm sure MS and Nintendo have equal standards of 'truthyness' if that makes you feel better.

Err its says "estimated" 165k units, so its not a firm figure at all.

The thing is, the figures may not be what Sony want.

There's a strong possibility that many of those consoles were sold to people with no intention of buying/playing games on the thing.....the PS3 is by far the cheapest BluRay player you can buy.

That's what your paying for, yet it's something that Sony doesn't want you to buy a PS3 solely for. The difference in royalties paid to Sony between a PS3 game and a BluRay disc is surely quite large.

I should think saithis, that at this stage in the game any sales are good, they need to start getting back the money from R&D and the Blu-Ray player.

I always knew it would sell well at the start because lets face everyone in the 8-40 age bracket knew it was coming out.

I think its long term where the important game is!

    Hmmm.
165,000 Blu-Ray players sold in 2 days. Sony might just pull this one off and finally make a successfull format.
It'll be interesting to see what happens to HD-DVD/Blu Ray and console market share over the next 6 months.

Well if it's even somewhat true Sony must give themselves a pat on the back - that's a lot of money that just got sunk into the console market.

more generally, I don't doubt that the PS3 will end up as a successful product - I just don't see any reason to justify buying one at the moment. later, sure, but not right now. it will hopefully reach the "damned annoying hardware, but worth it for some of the games" stage the PSP is at

It's not over for Sony, they're probably losing money of each console, if they don't sell a load of games and peripherals (which makes the biggest profit anyway, even if they make some money on the console) then they are in trouble.

So so far, they've probably lost themselves quite a lot of money.

    Think about it.

Who is the sort of person that buys a console?
People who aren't good with computers, or people who are casual gamers that play a couple times a week or so.

So why is a casual gamer going to spend £400+ on a casual console, that at the moment doesn't really have anything more to offer than the 360.

I think one of the only things that made it sell well in the US was because it was a cheap-ass BR player.

I bought one and I'm neither of those. I bought it because I liked the look of some of the games.

When you add a wireless dongle and the ability to play HD optical media, the PS3 is probably a little cheaper than the 360. There's also no forking out for XBL to play your games online. Looking at it that way, the PS3 isn't as much of a rip.

Holy crap. I saw a PS3 running Motor Storm in M&S yesterday with the missus.

She thought it was playing FlatOut 2. And fair enough to her because it looked just like Flatout 2 on my PC which is not a monster. The 360 and the PS3 are going to be so out of date by Christmas it's not even funny.

Still, if I had an HDTV I'd buy a PS3 even though I have a PC that's better at games because 1. it's a BluRay player and 2. consoles always get cool games that aren't available on the PC.

    Hmmm, Katamari HD...

I think we're too focused on technology in general - what's the point in having super uber new features when we don't even utilise the old ones fully? I had a quick go on G-Zero FX? on the gamecube the other weekend and it looks blooming fantastic - at least as good as most PC games out at the moment.. yet it's running on something roughly equivalent to an ATI 8500..

We'll get things that look great on the 360 and PS3 simply because developers can get the most out of a fixed specification system. It'll take a while for them to learn the tricks, but it's actually worth their time to do so, unlike for the PC, sadly
