    Re: Dragon Age: Origins

Cheers shadow, made a load of potions and it really helped. Went to help the Dalish Elves out and finding myself kicking ass with my mage now! Cone of Cold is really a great spell, just the upgrade I needed .

Now that my party isn't getting mauled by everything, I'm enjoying this much more. It's still challenging, but at least I'm not having to retry everything 10 times.

Ahh not got that far yet. least I know there's storage in my future

Yup, I've been buying every backpack I can find. Up 110 now. But I loot everything and explore every nook and cranny, so it fills up very quickly.

EDIT: Oh balls it's DLC? Where'd I put my card?

Not that I've needed it yet. Buying backpack space is a good gold sink - I'm up to something like 125 and still fill it. So far I'm not short on gold, so balance is about right. Using the above mod may make it easier, it's a bit of a work in progress apparently (will make one myself one day I expect).

Also I cant remember where but there is merchant (possibly in Orzammar) that sells unlimited lyrium powder and distillation agents so you can make better health potions and lesser lyrium potions.
Lyrium dust can be obtained from the circle tower in any quantity. The dwarf in camp sells distillation and concentration agents in any quantity (though they're not cheap).

I found having a dedicated healer (Wynne) in party means I need few potions for most fights, she really makes a big difference.

And a definite hell yeah for mages in general - my PC is a mage and is currently sitting at 59% party damage, I'm a good way through the game (just hit level 20), so that's not just because you only have a party of one at the start. Good use of your mage seems key to winning fights - the amount of damage and more importantly crowd control a mage provides is hard to overstate. Cone of cold is obviously the bread and butter, but fireball, stonefist, winter's grasp, and mind blast are all useful spells too. Not tried the paralysis stuff, but I'd image they'd come in very handy. Getting big groups locked down with cone of cold really makes fights a lot more controlled, and stops enemy mages tearing you up.

+1 to that. I loved having Morrigan in the party but Wynne was so much more useful as a healer I had to pick her instead most of the time.

Well I've given Morrigan some basic healing spells and changed her tactics to throw out heals every once in a while.

Plus, last night, my character gave her a big ol' kiss

Become a playa, and try the romance on Leliana as well, you'll end up with some funny dialogue between her and Morrigan as the game goes on.

I had a female character, managed to bag Alistair and Leliana though there was a bit of a falling out when they found out about each other, and got hit on by Zevran as well!

    Re: Dragon Age: Origins

After a frankly epic battle for a fair few hours last night I... killed the archdemon.. I've yet to 'finish' off the story (needed to cook some dinner) but the lack of saves in battle wears you down a bit..

I've no idea what my playtime is but it's huge - massive, fantastic, epic, cool game or what?

My only critism is the lack of a 'knock' spell meaning you're seriously disadvantaged without a rogue in your party (I spent some time going back to cleared out dungeons etc to loot!). Oh and the loading time bug which forces you to quite the game every few hours (and hence you remember to eat/sleep/pee - perhaps by design?).

Yep reading this made me choose a rogue as my first character. Once I've cleared the game for the first time, hopefully they will have patched the game so you can open chests by brute force / magic.

The only other bug I've found is the odd crash when I windows key to the desktop and a problem with the undead fight in the village which caused the event not to complete.

Overall the best game I've played in a long time! (Probably Icewind Dale 2!)

    Re: Dragon Age: Origins

Had about two crashes in total all the way through in all - hard to attribute them to anything as they weren't repeatable in any way whatsoever.

I'd rather have two fighters (shale and alastair in my case) with wyne and myself using the ranged magic/providing logistical support
Although the rogue's ability to fade is great fun in some levels as it lets you scout ahead/nick stuff right under the noses of guards. Might well do it again as you did once i've completed my cloning machine so i don't need to work or socially interact with humans for 100 hours or so.

    Re: Dragon Age: Origins

I've gotten hardly anywhere, had a bit of restart syndrome but it was more to do with a bug. Anyone who has the wardens keep dlc, just a quick warning. If you complete the DLC then go to the mages tower and complete that the quest for wardens keep reactivates but the keep is empty when you go there so you can't re-do the quest and you lose anything that you put in the stash chest for safe keeping... in my case it was the wardens armour

Don't know if its fixed yet, not looked, there has been no patches through steam though.

There has been one patch and one optional hotfix so far. More due soon I think.

I've had one crash so far, and I'm 40+ hours in.

Lack of 'knock' is a good thing - mages are already too useful! Rogues aren't all that useful otherwise, so it's a key ability.

Yeah, tbh the only thing keeping a rogue in my party is the ability to pick locks. Otherwise it would be 2 mages and the dog. Mages are just brutal when you get a couple of the top level spells and a nice high magic skill. Morrigan has developed a habit of killing everything in sight before my warrior can get close enough to hit them. Chain lightning ftw.

I still haven't figured out how to send one person somewhere without everyone following him/her! I'm sure it mentioned using f/h key but not cracked it yet.....
