Need for Speed Shift: sim racer?

The team working on this are some of the guys who worked on GTR2. from the videos released so far it does indeed look like the handling is realistic and is aiming for the sim racing fans

i looked at this when i first heard but i have had all the need for speed games and the recent ones have given me a huge lack of faith. i hope it will be good but Ea will not miss the november christmas release on an NFS game which will probably result in a poorly finished game, And yeah i know the trailers look good but they did for pro street and undercover and both games uscked

Re: Need for Speed Shift: sim racer?

In the 2nd vid, the RPM gauge has no relevance to the speed the vehicles travelling at. It just sits bouncing off the limiter and the cars still accelerating. Now - fine for say 2nd gear where you're getting wheelspin, but in higher gears too?

So much for the sim angle...

revs do appear to either bat 4000rpm or full whack all the time

Re: Need for Speed Shift: sim racer?

Some site did a preview on Shift, and they said it was pretty good. And you actually have to use the brake key this time, instead of just turning

I'm looking forward to it. Lets face it, it will be better than ProStreet. Not sure if it'll beat Most Wanted though.

Just the speed at which the revs rise is a cause for concern.

Also, having only seen a bit of the tralier, no sound, I will assume he is using a keyboard as the control? The handling looks shocking.

Edit: On a console, I hope he's not using the analogue sticks.

Re: Need for Speed Shift: sim racer?

I didn't think it was ever really going to play like a proper sim tbh, more like a Need for Speed game where you actually have to brake from time to time and you race on tracks rather than imaginary highways, I'll probably give the demo a try but I'm waiting for GT5 for my next proper racing game fix.

Proper sim fans won't remember it three weeks down the line but the Need for Speed name shifts units regardless of the quality of the game it's one of EA's biggest selling franchises year in year out.

Hardcore racing fans may not pick it up with Forza 3 and GT5 on the horizon (I know I definitely won't) but Need for Speed is like the Madden of racing games tbh it'll always sell well so long as it has the name behind it, clueless parents at christmas time and casual gamers will make sure of that

it's almost as though they're driving with the clutch in but somehow accelerating at the same time.. maybe just still in development at that time?

I hope so - that's a serious fault that shouldn't slip by playtesting for sure!

You earn points for ramming your opponent off the track. Tuning is via generic Stage 1/2/3 packages. This is not aiming for sim racing fans, it's aiming for the kind of people who liked GRID and who have a mental block when someone mentions the words Forza 3 or GT5.

Re: Need for Speed Shift: sim racer?

To be honest I don't even put GT5 in the 'sim' category, the whole fact that there's two different driving models is a huge turn off. You don't have a 'drift' mode for your car, you just drive it in a different way. This is something which I've never liked about the whole GT thing.

Don't get me wrong, I'll still probably buy it and have a lot of fun. But, I still don't consider it a proper sim.

Re: Need for Speed Shift: sim racer?

There was a preview by a German games mag (gamestar) that was quite critical of the preview version they had.
In short, good game but no sim.

There isn't a console sim. It doesn't exist. GT and Forza are fun, and shouldn't be described as arcade racers in the traditional sense, but they're nothing like a racing sim.
