What FPS with 6800GT playing Morrowind?

My system is 2500+ barton at 2.2 (3200+) and I am wondering what FPS I would get with a 6800GT. If anyone has the game running on 3200+ / 6800GT or similar hardware I would be interested to know how this game performs. It's not a game that features in any benchmarks. I want some idea of FPS wandering around outdoors in Balmora with graphics settings 4xAA 8xAF and 1024x768 for comparison.

My preference in this game is for a low resolution so text is big and a high AA so edges are smooth. The more FPS I can get the better because I want to up the draw distance.

Well the game is very CPU intensive, i get 14-30 FPS in Balmora 1024x768 16AF 6xAA (2200+ & 9800 pro)

I know you can turn up Antialiasing & Anistrophic filtering to there highest levels without a performance hit, but the video card itself wont make too much of a difference FPS wise.

What you can use to get good FPS with it other than the nice overclock you have is use a program called FPS optimizer which will adjust the games viewing distance to fit a fixed frame rate.

Some one else might have an answer for your question.

The Morrowind FPS optimizer is exactly the reason I want to know how much of a difference the 6800GT will make because maybe then I can unlock the draw distance and run it higher than default in this respect. I'm currently dippng as low as 17-19 FPS on a 9800np and in the past I have used the FPS optimizer to reduced the draw distance which does help frame rates considerably. I've always thought increasing the draw distance would be a GPU rather than CPU intensive but I could be wrong.

You have to remember this game was written in the days when GPUs were not so highly scaled. There is a huge amount of stuff going on in the background with Morrowind so it is highly CPU driven like HL/Steam is. On an A64 with 9800XT the FPS hits 100+ in the opening scene and goes to around 40 as you step off the boat with full in game settings. That said if you can perserve with the fps drops on your system you'll have a great game.

    I have 1 gig of PC3200...

Maybe there are a few things I can tweak... I could overclock my 9800np to pro speeds but for a couple of extra FPS it's not worth it.

While playing on a 6800GT with A64 3500+ and 1gb 3200 RAM, I get 35-60 FPS walking around outside in balmora, and 70-260 FPS (260 is the max FPS i think?) walking around in the fighters giuld. That is at 1024x768, 4x AA, and 16x AF with draw distance and shadows at max.

Dunno how much difference te video card makes in this game though, the speed could be all to do with my CPU.

*EDIT* Turning off AA and AF makes NO difference to the FPS, must be seriously CPU limited...

I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

    Thanks

Looks like an all or nothing upgrade. Hmmm!... that would be nice but I would much rather wait and upgrade just before some new game comes along. I should be OK for HL2 & STALKER fingers crossed. Morrowind oblivion.... so far away.

There's some nice tweaks to be found on this web page.

I noticed a nice increase in FPS and speed after using these tips.
