    Half Life: Source

Am I correct in saying that HL:S is the original HL, just updated with better graphics and stuff?

If so, is it possible to buy it on its on (ie without HL2 etc)?

I've just completed HL2, and have decided that I should play the original since I have LOADS of unanswered questions .

I think I should also point out that when I click on "browse games" in steam, it says that only 1 HL2 offer may be purchased per account.

    Thanks

HL:S is HL on the source engine. They haven't re-done any models or textures, the only thing they have done is implemented the new water and physics. Still a damn good game though

EDIT: and no, currently you can only buy it in a steam package.

Yeah - the problem is I've already got HL2, therefore:

    a. It won't let be get HL: S
    and
    b. I wouldn't want to anyway because I'd get another copy of HL2.

is it not possible to upgrade your pack?

im guessing you have bought the bronze pack of steam? if you look around a few hl2 fan sites you might be able to find out how to upgrade via steam to say silver pack?
this would cost less than actually buying silver pack because you have already payed for bronze so it would be around 10 pounds

or you could contact the steam guys directly at www.steampowered.com

shop around and you should be able to find out how to acquire it

    or...

buy the hl generations pack for ten quid down the shops - you'd get hl1 rather than hl source, but it's not worth worrying about shiny new water in a fairly dry game

Yeah - that was my other option - I just prefered to have the newer one .

What did you mean by saying it was a "fairly dry game"?

Ah OK. So there won't be much graphical difference between the two because there's not much water. And the other thing that'll be different is that objects won't have their own realistic mass etc?

If that's all it is, then I might as well get the original .

    it isnt just the water

i think there is better lighting and shading on the objects...not sure if the physics were updated, valve obviously couldnt be arsed with this, look at css they re-did the whole thing, why didnt they do that with half life that would have been so good!

having played it through last weekend, it pretty much is just the water - oh, that & enemies are a little bit sourcier in terms of not gibbing anymore, boxes are sourcier in that they explode a little mroe than they used to when you beat them with a crowbar

Its such a shame, because after seeing the CS:S beta, I thought that the level of improvement would be similar, in graphical terms. Thats why i bought the silver package online instead of just a retail version, and I guess its understandable - they dont have time to redo EVERYTHING do they - but I feel its a wasted opportunity.

It just could have been so ace to play through again with new things to look out for, or at least to see what had been done better.

OT - Is it me or are a lot of the sounds in HL2 VERY similar to the ones in the original?

What I dont understand is WHY there charging so much more just for HL:S and DOD:S.
I cant imagine many people getting the silver/gold packages, and thats going to kill off dod:s.

Wouldnt it be better if the free mods, stayed free? And Ive already got hl1, so its assumed that you should get hl:s, becuase its almost the same thing!

    |Silent| - Exactly! I presumed that because I was made to pay a premium for it that there would be SOME major differences/updates, but as i stated before, a missed opportunity, especially those who havent played the first one
