people smoking in my face is down right rude. They wouldnt like it if i jsut kept letting it rip in their faces for 2 hours, making their clothes reak of fart. Worst is those people that put the cigarette away from their faces in that audrey hepburn pose, put it closer to somone elses face. what a cheek

I am a smoker and I dont mind the ban folks are right they should have to breathe my smoke. But at the same time they should ban alcohol in breeds antsocial behaviour from both young and old. drink driving, urinating in public, vomitting all over the street, brawling, general abusive behavior and of course the strain put on A&E departments at weekends along with the other costs borne by the NHS because of alcohol abuse. Of course that is not all drinkers, most are sociable people like most smokers who just like a little pleasure in their life and do it without offending other people. So lets stop all this ban this because its bad for you and get of your high horses telling me whats bad and good for me I can work it out for myself without being legislated against or preached to. In my own home I only smoke in one room in the house with the door closed and the window open so my wife, children and dog do not have to breathe in my filthy disgusting smoke. I would smoke outside but the air is polluted because of the flights from Stansted airport and the huge amount of traffic from the nearby dual carrigeway. Ah! I have an idea lets ban them as well.
Flying over my house what a cheek.
As some fellow scot has pointed out already, the ban's been in place here for just less than a month over a year (don't ask how many minutes and seconds).
The ban, from experience here and NY, is not that bad. Pubs are nicer on the overall, but clubs are the absolute stinker. Clubs just stink of BO and farts - most of which will accumulate and would wish there was no such ban.
Even as a smoker, I don't like being in a restaurant with smoke in my presence until I've finished my meal (selfish, whatever, who cares). I just dont think clubs are a particularly good choice.
But hey, lets hope they can find a link for farts and bo causing cancer or other potential lethal harm to innocent bystanders so that can ban those as well.
On the social side, I've met some really good people just from having to go outside and having a chat - although I experienced this before in NY - the thing is that smokers was always a social crowd (esp if you work somewhere with fag breaks).
As a smoker (quit once, but back on it), and once hater of smokers, I can see both sides of the popular arguments - and no one is right, and no one is wrong. What matters is once the law's been laid, there's really F-A you can do about it and rebelling against it is somewhat useless (and dumb). You can argue ban it for certain places, or have certain indoor places for smoking, but why bother if it's being put in place (or has been already).
And yes, my whole street smells of smoke even in open air due to the amount of smokers - I'm interested in how the smoking ban will affect Scotlands figures for lung cancer (or even 2nd hand smoke related cancer). Im not being cynical, or speaking from a smokers point of view, I'm merely interested.
I would rather be smelly than have cancer. Equally, I would rather have someone stinky sit next to me on the bus/train, than someone smoking. The stink isnt going to kill you, but the smoke is.
Unfortunatley, smokers smell horrible, and have really bad breath. That is without exception.
yeah but pubs (weatherspoons and similar especially) have no smoking sections (the union rooms in newcastle has a no smoking floor!), and not really the same as you dont have to sit next to someone smoking
point taken about killing you, maybe the quitting helo should be very and easily accesible for free on the NHS? smokers have pumped in more than enough via taxes IMO
The help for quitting is free and easily available on the NHS. I just mentioned it and my doc had gone and got a box of patches off his shelf, and gave be a prescription for more, and some lozenges....all of which didnt work for me, cold turkey is the way forward
It shouldnt be a case of "ooh, well if we give up, they should look after us with better care". You wouldnt be doing anyone else a favour by giving up, only yourself.
Contradicted yourself in one sentance there
Currently, 26% of people of smoking age smoke. If everyone gave up logically the missing tax to be clawed back would 1/4 of the tax raised by cigarettes on everyone. Also, as you mentioned there, Smokers cost the NHS money I cant remember if they pay more tax then cost the NHS or not, but its close. I dont think that'll add up to an "enormous hike in income tax"
"In a perfect world... spammers would get caught, go to jail, and share a cell with many men who have enlarged their penises, taken Viagra and are looking for a new relationship."
Didnt realise it was quite that easy clunk!
*makes note to go to doctors when I go home*
I was under the impression that the ban only affected places serving food, or was that scrapped? If not then the club thing is a bit irrelevant.
EDIT: that was scrapped, so smelly clubs here we come!
