Josh, the best and most important thing for you to do is to get the experience and a good reference so that after working there 2 years you can go and get another better paying job. So what if you are earning a few K less than other people you know.

Don't think short term think long term. I'm earning double what i started on after graduating but thats been down to hard work. Just because you want more money doesn't mean you are going to get more. Rewards come if you get things done right. And sadly java games making for mobiles is going to be at the bottom end of the pay bracket in my opinion.

Take the experience, get your skills up and a good reference, and then if you really want to get more money start looking to get into a more financial sector.

a sysadmin with specific experience in a very important (and rare) topic is worth more than an inexperienced graduate

but the person i am talking about graduated from the same class has me

At TiG: good point and i agree that the financial sector has lots of benefits there. i might start looking into going into that sector once my java skills are up to a certain standard..

truthfully - you sound very silly.

your 6 months into a job and already after more money than you took the job at, comparing your self to other people in different positions and different sectors, generalising, planning your next sector, and bigging your self up, all this after 6 months work experience.

If you truly believe you are worth more (which it sounds like you do) apply for some jobs outside the company your in and see how far you get and be ready to answer the following questions

1.) why are do you want to change jobs after 6 months
2.) why did you take the current job knowing the sallery and want to change jobs

stop looking at what other people have got and are doing and start gaining experience that is valuable to the career path you want to follow.

I've said this a few times in this post alone 6 months !!!!! no matter how good you think you are 6 months real world experience is nothing - you have to work at the bottom to gain the grounding in working in real world business senarios ( as a general rule of thumb).

If you present yourself to your current or future employer as you are presenting your self now, be prepared to stay on your current sallery for a long time.

everyones first job wont be sky high pay and emplyers use that as an excuse but i took it as thankfully to get my foot in the it industry which is jus so saturated now

id luv to do som java programming, aint done any since 2006 from uni, but id luv 2 restart, how complex r your coding? can u show me work extracts, where abts do u work ?

and if you could get a spell checker that would be smashing too. FF, IE7 and the Google toolbar all have them.

ikonia you make good valid points in a harsh way. maybe thats just the nature of you but still am grateful for your comments. i'l concider changing jobs after 2 years if my salary hasnt risen by then. And then if they ask me why i want to change my job, i will simply say because based on my exp and skill i am worth more than what my previous employee estimated

ha ha ! at last. Well done, its clicked.

No harm in asking for pay rises at appropriate times, I'm not saying sit on it for 2 years.

Work out whats appropriate for you at that moment in time in your situation.

When I graduated, one of my classmates took an office job and was earning about double what another friend other was. Ten years later, the other friend had finished his Chartered Accountancy training, had several years experience under his belt and was earning more than triple what t he first guy was. Most "professions" involve an apprenticeship which often involves hard work, long hours and initially at least, very poor pay ..... but you do get the training and experience that pays off later. Comparing current pay rates between different careers is not necessarily a productive thing to do.

If you got a firm promise at interview (in writing) of a pay rise after x months, and it hasn't happened, then you'd be entitled to (carefully) query why not? But otherwise, you've just learned a valuable lesson about interview promises - if they won't put it in writing, there's a reason why they won't, and it probably is that it's just a cheap (free) tempter to get you to sign on.

How many people people have been told something like that only for it to fail to materialise? I certainly have. So, if they don't include it in the offer letter, assume it's not going to happen, and make up your mind on the basis that it was just so much hot air. Then, if it does subsequently happen, you're pleasantly surprised, rather than disappointed and bitter when it doesn't.

As for asking for a pay rise after 6 months, well, I'd suggest it's not going to go down well., and it may well get your card marked.

But ... and it's a large 'but' .... not all companies treat their staff well. It is not unknown for companies to take on bright people, even graduates, for "grunt" work, knowing full well that after a year or so, when promises don't get fulfilled, they'll be dissatisfied and wanting more. This type of company may well try to string you out for as long as possible, because meantime, you're cheap labour. And, when you refuse to put up with it any longer and leave, they simply look for fresh cheap labour.

I am certainly not saying that this is what your company are doing. But it DOES happen. You'd be well-advised to keep your eyes open, both about your career development, and about what happens or has happened to other staff.

If you think you're with a 'user' company like this, don't delay too long before getting out, but do it on your own terms. Find an alternative before moaning about it, and think up a plausible reason for seeking to move after a relatively short period ... a reason that reflects well on you. And don't bad-mouth your current employer to prospective ones, so I'd strongly suggest not saying you think they're screwing you. If you do, you sound like a malcontent and any new employer is going to wonder if you'll bad-mouth them when you come to move on. Always, always always have a positive reason for moving on, or at least a plausible and non-negative one.

    All IMHO, of course.

I was stating the fact that unless you have met someone then its a bit silly to take it like gospel, i have learnt this.
