    payrise advice

Hi i have been working with this company developing mobile casino games on a mobile phone for nearly 5 months and earn only 17k!

i work in london and the average for a java developer is 25-30k

My questions is do you guys have any advice on how to negotiate a possible salary increase from 17-24k? is 17k low for a java developer working in london?

Unfortunately, in my experience, the only way to get a decent pay rise is to get a new job.

I'd disagree with that, I probably wouldn't go asking for a payrise 6 months into a new job though, you knew what you were getitng paid, and that other jobs were offering more.

the average could indeed be 25-30k, but thats probably with at least a couple of years experience.

5months into the job, you cant be too picky im afraid, you should wait for at least 1year, getting a raise of 7k is unlikely though..

that 25k-30k is for 1 year experience. some offer it without no experience! someone with 5-6 years experience earns near enough 40k

check this link for a job ad. 20-25k advertising a job that i am basicly doing now but more http://www.reed.co.uk/job/Details.as...&ns=True&ps=10

And another one with a starting salary of 25k. it doesnt state how much experience you need though

i'd agree on that..UNLESS you're setting the world alight in which case you'll be asking for more/harder work, creating new suprises for people in the stuff you do, and you'll know they want to talk to you about a higher pay scale.

Ask yourself...are you pushing really hard....all the time? Do you get noticed? Are they going to worry that you'll go? Are you monstering the projects, walking them and moving to harder stuff fast.

I hate to say it, but to get a pay rise you normally have to wkrk harder BEFORE you get the extra dough, not once it starts paying.

thx for the tip zak and yea im begining to complete tasks ALOT quicker than before. it took me 3 months to complete a project, but now im on the verge of completing another and i just started it over a week ago.

umm i think i will ask for a payrise once i get a couple of projects out of the way but so far so good.

i guess there is no imediate rush to get a pay rise (wife keeps moaning about my salary :@) so i will just wait a couple months before i plunk the courage to ask for a reasonable pay rise

ha ha ha ha, how ammusing - your first job, and your paid "ok" for a first job, and you already want a 3k pay rise. Most ammusing.

Try getting actual industry experience and basing your request for a pay rise at your anual review based on your experience and your performance. Less than a year in the industry is not enough time to warrent a pay rise.

If you know you're good enough, i'd say there are no problems with going straight ahead and asking at a prescheduled meeting with your head o' department. I did, and came away very happy.

First job i wouldn't expect to pay you more than 20k for the first year. You impress after the first year and i'd expect to see a few thousand rise, after 2 years of experience yeah 25 ish. After that its down to what you've done, how good your CV is.

But asking for a rise before you've earnt one would be viewed negatively. just be careful when you ask.

Goddammit ikonia your spelling is terrible....

17k is surely low for the city and yes you would earn more stacking shelves. Suppose get a minimum of expereince and then get a better job externally.....I have no clue about IT but I think in most industries the best way to accelerate your earnings is to aim to achieve something and then move externally every two years

TBH, I think its early doors to be talking of rises, give it a year. I know it frustrating seeing others getting paid more for what we think are lesser jobs but thats because they have to pay a scale to get people into the role and it all depends what the employer values its employees at. Also the job scales on the internet are not always accurate and often give out false hope for all kinds of industries.

As you said its a first job and 6 months in you should still be enjoying the job, not thinking about the money, they will not be interested in a pay rise yet as they haven't seen your potential on a long term basis.

I agree 100% with TiG's comments, it will be viewed negatively. And 17k to 24k is massive and almost laughable at your stage, I can see where you're coming from and I sympathise but honestly I highly doubt it will happen. Beaver away until you reach a year and then bring it up.

My spelling sucks when typing in conversation as I just glance review it rather than site down and spell check it

then why did you take it ??? you can't have accepted a job expecting to jump 3k in 6 months ????
