Josh - would you mind going back to the George Graham way of playing (zzzzz) if it meant winning the European Cup?

As much as I hate to see him go, I think that the time was right for him. To see the player who used to smile so much and was once the greatest player in the world, so frustrated all the time was sad in a way. Both for him and for Arsenal. Even if he stayed, I don’t think that we would ever see the real Henry again.
The truth of the matter is that the team really isn’t suited to the way that he plays anymore. Undoubtedly, his greatest asset is his blistering pace, along with his clinical finishing. However, although we still play intricate football, we lack cutting edge and true creativity. Yes Cesc is great, yes Rosicky is very mobile, however, there are two things that I truly believe that have affected the way we play, and that is the departure of both Pires and Bergkamp.
Both these players were able to play the incisive ball, the through ball – probably the most difficult thing to really do (along with finishing I guess) and it really comes as no surprise that every decent striker that has played with Dennis has flourished because of it. Wrighty, Anelka, Henry. I honestly believe that he was one of the greatest players ever. Think back to all those classic Henry goals, and you picture him running away from defenders, after a raking, perfect through ball from Dennis or Pires (whose assist ratio was fantastic).
Watching last season, what struck me most was the fact that we barely saw him running BEHIND a defense towards an opposition goal. Too often, he would get the goal with his back to goal or whilst he was stationary infront of a wall of defenders. It was just asking too much of him to be able to just go past everyone all the time, as sadly, he became more of a target man for crosses, or just layed the ball off. Hence his frustration. People don’t realize, but when we were a great team, we had so much technical ability to play accurate, fast, one-touch football. That enabled Henry to utilize his talents fully, and basically, he cant do that now.
I thank God for the time that he was with us – he was part of the greatest team that I have ever seen, and on many occasions was breathtaking. To see him sad is just wrong. Remember, he is verging on 30 and he probably didn’t want to miss out on the chance to play football like that again. As good as United have been, I don’t think that they play football in the same way as Barcelona and Arsenal. I think that is why Barca is the only place he could have gone. I hope he does well, he deserves to be remembered as the great that he is. I don’t think that he will do as well as he did as Arsenal, purely because the team will not be setup around him like it used to be.
All the doom bringers will point to the fact that we will crumble blah blah… Henry didn’t really play that much last season, and we did okay without him at times. But you make a table out of the top four and we are actually at the top of that. That shows we have good quality and the ability to mix it with the top teams. But make the table against the lower teams and we fail miserably. That’s the problem – and interestingly, we had that same problem with Henry in the team.
I believe that if we stay injury free, then we will surprise people. We have good quality in the side and just need to strengthen some key areas, but I still see a top 3 finish this season (But then again, I am a fan… )
But I’ll be adult enough to leave his divorce out of this discussion. Its nothing that any of us have a real right to voice an opinion about. Football-wise, he left for football reasons – he wants to be the best he can be, like the old Henry. Is that a crime? No. It weakens Arsenal, but doesn’t make us a weak side.
Be warned – the club will always go on. Ever thought there would be life after Wright….????
fantastic post john, you made some good points there, i still feel henry let us down by telling everyone he would stay and making up silly excuses, i wish he was honest and outright instead of blaming wenger(could stay) and dein(who may come back) for him leaving.
thats my only beef with henry. the fact that he wasnt man enough to admit that he just wants to end his career on a high and not agree a new contract with us.
about next season, like john said, if the majority of our team stay injury free, i dont see a reason why we cant challenge for honours. out of the 3 teams above us, we managed to lose just once againts liverpool and did the double over manu and diddnt taste a defeat againts chelsea.to me that shows we can mix it with the best has john said. whoever thinks that west ham and tottenham are gunna finish above us, needs there heads examined...

Winning against teams above them doesn't qualify arsenal to challenge for the title. Football is FAR deeper than that and currently Arsenal and Liverpool are nowhere near the level and consistency of Chelsea or Man Utd. Arsenal are better passers they always have been a great passing team, but they lack that raw power going forward that Chelsea and UTD seem to have. Those teams are on a different playing field right now.
Now no matter how much you think you know about football (not aimed at anyone that; speaking generally), no one can tell what will happen next season, but past seasons have shown where different teams tend to end up in the table. It is a safe bet that the top four of the last two seaons will be the same top four next season and like those passed seasons liverpool and arsenal will have their work cut out if they want any chance of competing with Abramovich FC and UTD. UTD raised the bar last season and took it to chelsea, now liverpool and arsenal need to do the same. Just for you to note Josh that arsenal have finished 20 and 21 points behind the eventual league winners for the past two seasons. They have their work cut out to close that gap next season.

Again showing the point Arsenal fans can not see past their own team. Have you ever seen a match or football team which is not Arsenal playing?
other than that some valid points. What people on this thread who J.O.S.H says knows nothing about football have been commenting on was the bitterness he showed on TH leaving and that fact he had to start a thread on it. Which is typical of someone who has a one sided view on football.
