Right my shiny new MDA VARIO3 awaits me when i get home. whats the first thing i should do to it. shall i install one of the many custom roms and radio's you guys have been babbling about?

which one should i install first? whats the benefits of installing such roms and radio's to begin with?

Play with it before you start upgrading,
Especially if it's your first windows mobile phone.

For cool slickness, install Pocket CM2 and Home UI.

Take your time with it and get used to it before upgrading - I mean you don't buy a new OS and upgrade it before you know what it's capable of!

Once you understand the phone fine - 1 month should do it, you'll know what you WANT to upgrade/change!

Re: Just got my MDA VARIO III (HTC KAISER)

    Good advice above.

ROM flashing is quiet a big step, but there are plenty of great apps to install. Good ones to start with are

    PocketMusic (music player)
PointUI (very nice replacement front end, but is an app so can be turned on and off)
    Total commander (good file explorer)
Yahoo Go! (mobile map, business finder, etc)
    Googl maps (as above)
    Netfront browser (mobile Internet)
    Opera mobile (as above)
    Quickmenu (customisable start menus)

    TomTom sat nav

If you want to sort video files to watch on the phone try
    PocketDivXEncoder

Re: Just got my MDA VARIO III (HTC KAISER)

Custom roms from what I understand give better battery life and contain more application (and up to date versions) pre installed then standard stock roms. Have a look round xda developers.

ROM Flashing FAQ for Newbies - Please read first [Updated: 2008/02/22] - xda-developers

That thread is a good place to start

cheers mate i may give it a go sooner rather then later. no harm in having a custom ROM that improves vital features of my spanking new GIZMO right

Re: Just got my MDA VARIO III (HTC KAISER)

I really would just be happy with it the way it currently is. Get used to it, install a few apps and go from there. The camera btw may be better with dutty roms etc but its never going to be something your going to get amazing results with. The sony erricson / nokia mobiles still have the edge on the quick snap front.

Re: Just got my MDA VARIO III (HTC KAISER)

i dont realy mind about the camera has i still have a N95 i could use for that plus my DSLR one as well.

edit: i have a smal issue. i put my phone on standby by pressing the power button and when i try to cal the phone, there is like a 5-10 seconds delay when the actual device recieves the call while the person calling me hears it ringing!

Re: Just got my MDA VARIO III (HTC KAISER)

Instant mesaging isnt allowed on normal web and walk unless you signed up for a plus tariff. Youll be stuck using web clients such as msn web messenger or ebuddy etc. All mobile phones in my experience smartphone or not dont ring immediatly there has always been a slight delay.
