I just recieved my Natwest Internet Banking Card reader.

To be able to do certain stuff online, such as setup new money transfers, I need to put my Switch card into it (it's not USB..it's standalone) enter my Pin, and then the Natwest site will ask me to input a code from my card reader.

Quite pleased that they're trying so hard to kill online fraud

just tried it....bloody fantastic

It auto powers on when the card goes in.

Webs site shows me two numbers...I confirm that the last 4 of both match. Then I choose which card I'm gonn ause from their drop down.....obviously they know which cards they issued me with.

Then it tells me to input the code from the screen into my card reader, this creates a code that I put in online.

I'm well pleased. It works, straight off, in nicely made and I like that

I've got a Natwest account that i use online, are they just sending these out or do you have to request it?

Sounds like it works nicely. It did make me think about how much profit they make off us, to be able to afford to send everyone something like that But I suppose its best that they are giving us something back, than not.

This was what was supposed to happen all those years ago when online banking was first concieved. Given they're stand alone, I wonder how they're supposed to work, same number each time? random number from a set range? based off the date & card number multiplied by a hash??

Very interesting ... I'd not heard about it before but it's something I'd like to try and I'm with NatWest too ... I wonder how they're selecting their candidates?

I know that one day i'll get caught out wanting to do some online banking, and I wont have my card-reader on me... and then I will be cursing Natwest for their anti-fraud devices...

I' ve recently received something very similar from Barclays. TBH I thought it was a bit of a PITA and is only really useful to combat fishing - which in my techie unsympathetic view is mostly a case of people using the internet without being qualified to do so. Yes it could also help against man in the middle / replay attacks but is that really a realistic threat? The Barclays one is a VPN / secure ID key style thing - it gives you a full 'random' code to enter - you don't get prompted for select digits. I've yet to check that the codes are one time only. I presume they expire and cannot be re-used but haven't tested...
