sorry for the thread revival
but was wondering ....did the LHC cause the global financial meltdown?
It formed a black hole, sucking in everyones money.

first micro black holes start to consume the world. maybe...
well I only seen it now when the post before mine caused me to get an email. but you have now also took part in ressurrecting the thread as you have posted too its fun isn't it lol

Is it going to get turned on again? Have they had a successful run yet? I'm really interested in this stuff but have been unable to keep up with this story xXx
Yep its still running and getting larger and larger collisions:
http://forums.hexus.net/general-disc...g-night-2.html
(we have our very own hexus member Fraz working there )
It just doesn't make the general senesational press headlines anymore .
Yes indeed - we've had many many successful runs. The LHC has been running solidly since March this year, and we've had plenty of periods of stable beams for the experiments to take data. In fact, here is a bang-up-to-date plot of the luminosity (~number of collisions) delivered by the LHC and recorded by CMS, which is the experiment I work on:
As you can see, the luminosity has been increasing exponentially all year as the clever people in charge of the LHC cram more and more protons into the accelerator. In fact, the flat bits on the plot are periods of "machine development" where the accelerator guys are learning to do just that. This is why the graph is even steeper after every flat period, as there are more protons in the accelerator.
The 2010 proton physics run is just about to come to an end. Starting this week sometime, the LHC guys are commissioning heavy ion beams, so instead of putting protons in the LHC, they'll be putting in lead nuclei instead. Lead ion beams produce totally mental collisions, and hopefully lots of quark-gluon plasma. I'll post up some pics when we start getting them.
I get the gist. If a proton at ~C is a lot of energy then a Lead ion at 208 is a metric buttload of energy.
Society's to blame,
Or possibly Atari.
