Resource based economy ftw! Get rid of money and employ technology. Everyone benefits.
Oh and on the binmen - bit of a perfect situation but a point to ponder nonetheless - Two men both try to become doctors, one succeeding with great success, the other failing due to a lack of education/money etc, becoming a binman. Each works as hard as the other at trying to become a doctor. Who should get paid more?
Neither.
thats a different perspective!! outside the box i like it...
but the question ive really got on my mind is why is Gordon Brown so happy at the moment? is it because he now knows he will go down in history? or because he likes a challenge ? maybe hes happy because the torys look scared... or maybe its because the labour dream of nationalisation is coming true.
any ideas?
Why would the other fail due to lack of money/education? If the system is working then everyone should have the education they need to get to uni (they do as far as I can tell) and then money shouldn't be a barrier to becoming a doctor after that due to busaries/loans etc.
Come to some of the schools in South Wales! Not good at all. I've known people to try so hard back in school to pass exams and learn but just CANNOT do it, and get stuck in the bottom 'sets', generally penalised in life for being this way. Maybe theres nothing we can do about that, I don't know, but the point still stands some of them tried harder than some of the folk at the upper rungs of my year, and they don't deserve a worse quality of life for it.
We are not dealt the same set of cards at birth, and we all face externalities outside our control (e.g. place of birth). All we can (IMO should) do is try and make the best of what we have, but I think that the bottom line should be determined by how much society will pay for our skills. Life may not be perfectly fair, but it is just as an unfair in my opinion to take away two kings from someone just because they they already hold three aces. It is not practical to gauge how hard someone work/study anyway. How do you determine that they are being as efficient as the one who doesn't seem to be working as hard? Should someone be penalised simply because they can obtain the same results in less time (either through better education, or natural talent?). I certainly do not think so.
I never said they should be penalised, but in the same vain why should they be elevated when it boils down to simple luck of the draw? I guess the point I'm making is that in a society where the rich/well educated more or less stay rich/educated, it is based on not being fair, on circumstance. This system is now breaking down and being proven not to work in all of our best interests.
I didnt really mean we should develop a system of gauging how hard people work, I was just using it as an example because of course, I agree with you that it's impractical
The sooner the revelation comes to everyone that we are truly all 'in this together', the better.
So is the problem that the schools aren't doing their job properly, or that some people are just thick?
So your complaining about the luck of the draw factor? Well look at the world rather than just one country, how come we don't really try to help them?
Anyone born in the UK has access to truely world leading education system. Private schools obviously make it easier, but its not as if you can't get a good job enless you goto a private school, thatcher very kindly did away with the old boy network (how come socailists always ignore the good things she did?)
Now at the same time, evolutionary ideas are still present, that is to say parents always want to do whats best for their kids. I've 5 GCSEs, i dropped out of the frankly abhorant secondary school i was in when 13. I rejoined at the A-level stage when 16, it took a lot of convincing for them to let me, a dislexic who's been out of school for 3 years, to do further maths. I only got a C (worst grade of the year). I now work for an alternative investment company, been responsible for a very well performing trade finding system, my point is that you don't get stigmatised in life by you background. But what my parents where able to do that helped me, was rase me well, i was always tought to try and make the best of my abilities, what ever they are. Its that fact that realy gives people an advantage the parents themself, not been sent to a private school.
Without been philosophical thou you have to just people on their actions, not intentions. Someone might try really hard but be absolutely useless, its not right that they should be paid as much because their simply not contributing as much.
There capitalist economy is based on the idea we're all in this together, and should be designed to encourage people to work as hard as they can.
