Gordon Brown... i quite like him now

He's grown on me and he has made some major PR cock up's, but if it was a choice of him or David Cameron. i would have brown any day.. A labour still seem to have no change of winning a general election but i think a labour / libdem coalition could be a possibility if the result is a hung parliament.

what do people think? Has your opinion of the PM changed ?

Yup. I think I will vote Labour next time. I still think Tories are going to win, but some of their policies are crazy (e.g. give FSA power to BoE?!?!). Cameron only says what he thinks the public will like.

I will still always vote for Boris for mayor though, because he is too cool.

While Labour's policies for the next term would make this country literally uninhabitable were they in a position to enact them, the Conservatives would be even more of a disaster - they are utterly talentless thieving hypocrites that want to destroy the NHS and school system altogether, and won't even cut your taxes in return for allowing them to do so. Another term of Labour govt would be better than a Tory one, in the same way that being raped in prison is better than death.

Best realistic outcome would indeed be some sort of Labour/Lib Dem coalition whereby Labour would be prevented from seeing through their most evil schemes and the Tories are kept well away from power

One case where the devil you know isn't better than the one you don't. It's Brown's economic incompetence that dropped us in the mess we're in, with the deficit we now have that WILL result in both the spending cuts and tax rises that are going to happen WHOEVER wins the next election, and Brown doesn't even have the honesty to be admit to it.

I'm by no means enthusiastic about Cameron, but he's a FAR better prospect than Brown. Personally, I'm totally convinced the next few years ago going to be financially painful regardless of who runs the country, and an unknown quantity strikes me as a marginally better option that a proven incompetent.

No matter who gets elected next year, they'll be cursed and criticised for the mess they'll inherit.

Gordon Brown is not, and never will be, a leader, and even his own party knows that. I'd dare say that he was handed the position as a sacrifical lamb, with his backers knowning full well that Labour were destined to loose the next election and whomever was Prime Minster at the time would become virtually unelectable.

Re: Gordon Brown... i quite like him now

    Mandelson for PM?!

I think my views are pretty obvious if you've read my politcal posts - I agree GB isn't the most competant PM we've ever had or are likely to have, but I think at the heart of it he stands for the right thing, just he's let down by incredibly clumsy PR. Cameron on the other hand is a very smooth operator, but I just can't agree with the Tory's underlying aims no matter how much they try to dress them up, or worse, hope that by not talking about them people won't realise. If they've changed from the traditional ones then why haven't they ever mentioned it? The silence can only lead me to assume they're the same.

I have a huge amount of respect for some Lib Dem policies too, but I don't know if they have an underlying soundness or if they just come up with good ideas from time to time.. unfortunately I don't like the man Clegg. Now if Vince Cable were leading them I think they'd get my vote.

Re: Gordon Brown... i quite like him now

I have to admit I am with Saracen here, Brown is the fool who dropped us into this misses, he kept on putting back the day they would have to start replaying money until it was too late. The treasury's growth forecasts where always wildly over optimistic. He borrowed stating he was investing for the future, while it is true borrow at 1% and getting a 2% growth in the economy is a good thing this is not what is happening. Regular funding which just recures every year is being funded from the borrowing this is a very bad thing and only makes thinks worse for later generations. Ironically the one thing I expect people think is a bad thing he did I think will be one of his greatest successes buying several banks for firesale prices, I do expect them to get atleast 100% return on that money, of course they could still mess it up.

It is seldom the creator of the problem has to deal with it, however with Brown he does, he does not have a mandate to lead us, he reflects everything that is bad about our electoral system. While I think he should go now, I expect to see him hold on the very end. I am not saying I believe Cameron will be better, I think however it is time for a change.

Now that would be really great! For constitutional reasons anyway. No theoretical reason why he could not be however he is in the house of lords and so could not be questioned at PMs questions, and would be completely unelected. That would really stir things up, and be utterly hilarious, particular when meeting other democratically elected leaders.

It'll be a cold day in hell before I vote for this Labour government. I can't say I much like the other options, but I know I'm going to vote for whoever looks like they might usurp Labour at the next General Election, even if that means voting blue.

However in our system of a constitutional monarchy only those who are in line of the PM job at election time (and won) are considered to have a mandate, as Brown has not done this. Blair is the one who go the mandate for this session. Other leaders who have governed for a while without a mandate are John Major, and more interestingly Winston Churchill.

I hate this blue or red choice that people jump between. There are surely much better smaller parties, independent candidates to choose from (no - I'm not talking about the BNP!)
