Or possibly a response training exercise, but thermals make more sense as it's cooling off now so the temp differential would make more sense so they can catch anyone running a folding@home farm in their house

This is more than likely the case if you live in a residential area and you can't hear any sirens at all, it happened the second time in my street last weekend. There was another grower in my street last year as well, both times people notice some strange smells, a police helicopter spends about forty minutes checking out my road at night and then within a week a bust's made.
Do the police even know what blues and two's are round there ?

Have you checked your local police website? We get a Police helicopter around here a lot, so they set up a website to tell you what it's been up to:
